Warranty Questions...
So I purchased a used FR-S in August, quite happy with it after putting coilovers, rims/tires and a custom exhaust onto it. So now I'm starting to think.... I've already put 15K on it since and it's not even squealed at me once.
I paid 3000$ for a 5yr/100K warranty.... And I'm starting to think whether I should cancel that warranty. That's one years worth of payments almost, that I'm not having to pay. I personally don't know what to do here. Maybe some opinions? It's a Hendrick AutoGuard Silver plan. |

Most of the real problems with these cars are the tail lights condenstation and maybe the ECU being replaced because of engine sensors (I had this done, check the ECU reflash TSB) Besides those things and maybe the syncros being bad are all you really should worry about. Only some people had catastrophic engine failure and it occured mostly within 30k miles.

Ask about transmission clunky noises for a replacement and fuel pump because chirp.
If the change all those before 60 days limit, then cancel it |
Those warranties are a waste of money IMO. They should pro rate a refund to you if you cancel beyond the 60 day window. You'll still have the factory 36k bumper to bumper and whatever the limited warranty is. Most likely anything that will go wrong will happen before the 36k is up.

The contract is through your dealer. You have to read the fine print on cancelling. Not all contracts are the same.

I've cancelled a couple "extended warranties" purchased through dealers. They can be tedious to actually get them cancelled, need to be persistent and it might take months of "processing" but the actual warranty company/bank will typically write you a prorated check for the remainder. For instance, if you paid $3k up front, but are 40% through it with no claims, then you should see $1800 (remaining 60% back). As mentioned above, not all contracts are the same, but you *should* be able to back out of it.
The only other problem if you've paid for this warranty and rolled it into your car purchase, is that you're likely paying interest on it within the car loan. So, even if you get a cash payment back, you're still paying for that full $3k and its interest because its in the loan. The only way to make a dent in this, is to make a big lump payment on the car, which would reduce the car loan by as much ($1800 example), and reduce the applied monthly interest as well. Ultimately this results in the loan being paid off a little sooner. (Also make sure you don't have early payoff penalties or other BS). |
maybe i read wrong but i believe subaru has a factory 5 year 60k mile powertrain warranty on all there cars, i would assume a big name like toyota/scion would do the same? As for the extended warranty i believe there just a waste of money, i work at a dealership and after talking with a few guys that try and sell them they usually seem to be full of loop holes. Hope its an easy cancellation if you run that route!

GET THAT SHIT CANCELLED...aftermarket warranties (non-Toyota) are junk and cost on them is about a third of what they charged you.
|
I believe Consumer Reports once wrote that only about 10% of the money you pay is statistically what the company will pay out. The rest is profit for the salesman, dealer, insurance co.

I'll debate more heavily on the cancellation. I also work at a dealer myself, and two previous ones too in service. I'm in sales now. |

I have one on mine but I didnt pay much for it. Dealer gave me a dealership employee discount and for what I paid for the car I really didn't mind a few bux more. I feel a little better having it than not having it. The car had no factor 36k left and I wanted a little protection. I read my fine print before buying it and re-read it agian after and its not bad. The car is covered to 104k. But being a scion it wont need it. Our last scion was a teriffic car. Finally ran into repairs 188k miles and the repairs would have been more than the cars worth. The fact it ran 188k miles and countless road trips will be the reason I will never take the scion badges off my car

Toyota has 3yr/36K "bumper-t-bumper" warranty, but they have a 5y/ 60K drivetrain warranty. |
