J2 exhaust + Headers = too loud! What Can I do

Hey Everyone,

Today I have a 2015 FRS and installed the J2 quad exhaust + downpipe system + tomei UEL headers. And I also have the grimmspeed air intake from few months ago.

The installers said it was loud, but I couldn't imagine it would be to the level of what I heard on the way home. The exhaust is making way too much noise, its an obnoxious level and I was actually afraid to drive home. Everytime I gased It was a high pitch rumble that actually hurt my ear drums....and its not a sensitivity thing. I had a TC before with intake and Greddy exhaust system at noise level that was not bad to me....I had hope this car would've produced the same but this is on a whole new spectrum.

What can I do to eliminate the noise level?

Replace one of those 3 things with stock components. By downpipe I assume you mean front pipe - replace that piece with stock first and see how the noise is.

Put your stock front pipe on, get quieter catback or put a front pipe on with a high flow cat plus a resonator. Pretty much your only options.

Hello @svnintl and welcome ..... to.....The Forum ......

Here's my suggestion.

Take off your aftermarket muffler and replace it with the stock muffler.

Then add a couple of these.

Then sell the J2 to someone who doesn't have an aftermarket header.....

ear plugs! or replace with stock parts.

The Invidia Q300 saved my ears from being ripped out after driving up a long freeway hill daily. I'm catless in the header.

The Invidia Q300 fits the FR-S/BRZ ? or did you have to make some mods ? Looks to be a good system if I can solve this noise problem.

Of course it fits. There is native Q300 variant for these cars too. And one most often seen suggested (alongside stock catback) to keep noise of catless header setups reasonable.

I believe Perrin also make a nice sounding quiet catback.

I has the non quad tip j2 engineering catback. Most of the sound is derived from the 2.75inch piping. I would either add a resonator and a highflow cat to your front pipe if you dont have it already.

TRD catback is also quite enough with no cats for me

What do you have for a tune? I have no Cats at all, and my wife never complains about the noise. I tune with an OFT and use the quiet start fix. I've also found better acceleration with milder AVCS exhaust timing. Your exhaust change has also changed your back-pressure and exhaust flow dynamics, so your tune should be changed to make the most of this. In the meantime you could reduce the noise without losing all your gains by just swapping out your front pipe with the OEM one. The Cat will reduce the noise you are hearing without impeding the flow as much as other options. One other thing, make sure to plug the opening on the passenger side floor mat where the sound tube comes through. and flip your rear seats up.
