Project Engineer hints at weight of roughly 2700lbs

Thought this info was interesting enough to deserve it's own thread:

Please follow link to inside line for full article.

Subaru unveiled the sub-Impreza sized chassis today at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show and followed that up with a private press briefing with project engineer Toshio Masuda to reveal a bit more about the car's technology:

"Masuda is not ready to offer a final weight on the sports car, but says it's approximately 20 percent lighter than the Subaru Impreza STI.

Will the sports car ever offer all-wheel drive? It is possible. So is a turbo verison, says Masuda. "We have no concrete plan about a turbo, but we are open in the future."

Curb weight for 2011 STi is 3373lbs for five door and 3384 for 4 door so according to this we can assume Subie version of FT-86II to weigh roughly: 2700lbs

please lock and delete if repost thnx

Your right, and even at 15% its still ~2850. Which isn't as nice as the 2700 but still. If Sube can make it 2700-2850, Toyota can make it even lighter.

2700 lbs!!!!! that's pretty good!!!!

It's a bit unrealistic with all safety equipments, but I could be wrong. Maybe 2800lb?

^ I think you'd be better off to trust one of the project engineers than your own opinion... Unless of course, you ARE an engineer and have worked on the FT86.... :)

Agreed with everyone else that 2700lb's is pretty amazing, and if anything I think the Toyota version will be slightly lighter (2600-2650lb's)!

I know 2700lb is possible, but I want be a little bit more pessimistic.

OldSkoolToys 03-01-2011 05:06 PM

2700 is already pushing it imo, especially for what this car is modeled after AND its size.

AE86 - 2200 lbs (USDM)

If the FT-86 comes in at 2700 lbs, then Toyota has already missed the mark. Compliment the extra weight with all the power you want, it'll still feel like a tank going through corners compared to my AE86.

Yes, I'm being a bit too critical. I can settle at 2600. Any more though and I'll be sad panda face big time.

i'm as big a fan of the original hachi as anyone here but i'm also more of a pessimist and a realist. you're comparing the FT to a 25 year old car with 25 year old crash safety tech, zero body rigidity and a 1.6 liter motor. current crash safety standards require all new cars to be built like tanks. blame the politicians.

BoostJunkie 03-01-2011 05:31 PM

I'm sat with 2700, 2600-2650 will be a big plus, especially if the offer a turbo around 250-300bhp... See getting all excited again

CyberFormula 03-01-2011 05:35 PM

Looks like its going to be a better car than an S2000...and cheaper.
And s2000 is already very fast and fun.

Blargh! I just realized my math was slightly off.....slightly.

2200 is the weight, roughly, of the GT-Apex model Japanese 86's, the heaviest of the series (coming with every option available), and that's closer to 2150.

The USDM spec was closer to 2400-2450, due to stricter U.S. crash safety regulations....hahahaha, I scared myself for no reason. I guess 2700 is reasonable......
I coughed out that last statement fyi.:bellyroll: 2700 sounds so heavy.

:bellyroll::bellyroll::bellyroll: this made me lol.

2700 for the Subie version so we can assume the Toyota version might be even lighter! I'm cool with that even though the CA models will be the heaviest due to all the extra emissions equipment.
