Drone? Headers/OP/FP
From another thread, someone pointed out that the over pipe and front pipe are known suspects for incabin drone. Currently I have MXP cattless UEL and MXP overpipe and it makes some noise with the stock CB.
I want to get a catted FP but I'm afraid if it will drone. Does anyone have all 3 pipes and have drone? I'm hoping an aftermarket FP will save my stock cat and deepen the exhaust noise I am receiving. Thanks! |
As long is resonated will not drone, in theory

Tomei UEL/MotivOP/MotivHFC/Greddy SP no drone at all.

Open Flash Header, Perrin Overpipe, Perrin 2.5 Catted Front Pipe, Perrin 2.5 Resonated Catback
No drone, sounds great. I had a GReddy EVO 2.75 Catback previously, droned like a bitch even before I had a header, overrpipe, or front pipe - so there's a case of drone that had nothing to do with front pipe/overpipe. |
OMFG... I hope the OP wasn't referring to the post long ago by someone insinuating that the miss-fitment of their exhaust rubbing against the car was the cause of drone. That's not drone, that the sound of rubbing. Said member has a habit of taking language and applying their own meaning to that language and promoting it as fact.
Drone is the observation of reverberations of harmonic frequencies that resonate in the cabin. Laymen's terms: sound that isn't absorbed in the mufflers will fill the cabin and the cabin acts like a speaker box vibrating your brain at specific resonate frequencies often observed as the car being totally livable except at X RPM. The only way to eliminate drone is to silence the exhaust. Resonators help with high frequency sound waves and mufflers act to limit lower frequency sound waves. Add mufflers and resonators -or things like catalytic converters, anything that disrupts sound waves, to eliminate drone. You can also add a ton of sound absorption material -of which the 86, purposely, has very little. I have a Skunk2 header, Berk over pipe, Berk front pipe, and a custom Magnaflow exhaust and I have no drone at all. The whole exhaust is 2.5" form the header collector and mandrel bent all the way back. I added a vibrant resonator to the front pipe to reduce rasp(high frequency sound). I have a very long resonator in the "mid-pipe" and I have a Magnaflow muffler in the back. |
Put some sound deadener around the wheel well, will eliminate most drone.
That big chunk of sheet metal reverberates like a mofo |
