Auto FI Tranny Issues?
Before I begin please take an easy on me I am just your average GT86 enthusiast with some moderate bolt on tuning experience..... As such I would love your recommendations.
So I have been thinking about supercharging my FRS for a while now. One of the main things that has kept me from doing this already is uncertainty with regards to how much power the AT can safely handle. I have been trying my best to research issues with the TCU with higher boost applications but I cant seem to find any documented issues. I was wondering if anyone has heard of issues with the added power from FI systems and the AT platform or what the theoretical power limit is for the AT. I dont plan on exceeding 300whp in that I plan on going with the Kraftwerks c30, 90mm pully, skunk2 headers, and run it on good ole 93 with a tune from motoeast... Thanks in advance!!!:):):) |
I will be supercharging my FRS soon and like you my car is a automatic. I have been told the automatic tranny is good for 300 lbs of torque. Or about 400 HP.

I think your auto will hold up fine at 300whp. if your really want a kick I would consider a gear change also, depending on your driving style. Is there any reason you have chosen skunk2 headers over some of the other proven brands???? Also with E85 so readily available why not go that route for engine cooling, more hp? Or Flex Fuel for the best of both worlds.
If I had a auto I would run a Kraftwerks C30 90mm pulley Ace header or a PPE header with a Nvidia N1 header back with Delicious Tuning Flex Fuel kit. I think that would be a blast to drive and super dependable daily driver. JMHO |

I hope this helps Personally as an average enthusiast myself I try to stay away from such builds. I don't have the skills, money and proper resources to keep a car running with that many mods and that much power. Usually "the faster you go the faster it blows up". But it is a lot of fun..!! That is the fun of it. It just cost thousands or tens of thousands in some cases, such as a blown motor, repairs, blown transmission, rear end axles need replacement plus the cost of tuning, the supercharger or turbo kit and the installation. This car has been like a blank canvas that we can paint an customize. The dealer may void the warranty in some cases also since this is an aftermarket part. With that much power things will break. I am not sure if this is a daily driver, weekend car or full race car. I am not sure how long you want this car to last either. If reliability, longevity and money isn't an issue go for it!! I would love to have this car in the 300whp range. I would be thrilled if I could get 200-220rwhp. You will have a sweet car!! I think there are some more milder options for average enthusiast like us. There are some smog legal kits that don't make as much power but I would think (and I would suppose others) would be more reliable and friendlier for us average people. I hope this helps |
A tranny cooler from a vendor like SSP Performance (they aren't too far from you) might be worth considering as well...

I have the exact setup you are planning. Zero issues with the AT since going FI.

I don't think anyone has found the limit for the AT yet. Meaning not enough people have reported busting their transmissions with boost to build a consensus.
I ran mine at ~11.5 PSI for 8000 miles before swapping pulleys to ~9PSI (total of 200 miles on this set up). No noticeable issues with the trans. |
The 2006 Lexus GS300 V6 which makes 245bhp and 230lb-ft torque used the exact same Toyota A960E automatic tranny that is in our cars. Those cars did have some tranny issues, however they were fixed with a recall and I would assume that Toyota has since ironed out the issue on transmissions made for our cars. Hopefully that sheds a bit more light on how much power this tranny can safely handle.

After some trashing of the car on the track and prolonged drift activities my HKS supecharger died and after its replacement I noticed that the AT also acting not that perfect as before: at full throttle acceleration from full stop it seems that the 1st gear disengages but the engine continues to rev till limiter, roars for a moment (similar to a situation on MT when you disengage the clutch a bit earlier than releasing the throttle), then fuel flow suddenly cuts (like if traction control in the "fully on" mode noticed a huge drift at high speed), then revs drop to like 4k and only then the 2nd gear engages. All this happens within a second or even less but feels like looong time - like casually slow "granma style" MT shift.
I replaced the AT fluid, it was dirty (25 500 km millage) but did not notice any changes after that. |
