Winjets and DRL mod question

Hey guys, new guy here. So I have a set of Winjet headlights (not yet installed) along with the DRL mod kit (also not installed), and I've been pondering the longevity / life of the LEDs if they're on all the time when driving (that is if the DRL kit is installed). I tried to look up any past topics, but unfortunately have not found anything of relevance.

Anyone with any experience or perhaps some electrical know how willing to chime in? I realize that it may be a little early to tell, as the Winjets have not been around all that long, but I figure I'd give it a shot and see what others might think. I really like the look of the LED eyebrows over the low beams, but I am not too fond of the idea of having the LEDs burn out prematurely.

Thanks for taking the time to read my question. Cheers!

I'm not worried, they're automotive LEDs they usually have a 8-12+ year life span, I had my DRL mod preinstalled by @fteightysix . Maybe they could chime in on the longevity of it. I personally am not worried in the slightest.

Also this will help with the install:

I broke my first pair installing this mod because of stupidity, and ended up having one of their pre-made ones done so be careful

Thanks for the reply, and that makes sense. I may end up going through with the mod.

That being said, thanks for that video link, as it will help very much. I've been reading up on the DRL mod and the cable splicing involved, and I'm definitely going to check things over ten fold before I attempt anything at all. Sorry to hear about your first set of lights. That must have been a real bummer.

Thank you again :w00t:

You'll be fine, I ended up giving the mod to a friend though after ripping it out of the damaged ones, just make sure you do the mod with the headlights out of the car that's where I failed, there was no space and I pulled the red wire on one side trying to get more slack. It installed perfectly in the other side though. So DO NOT PULL hard on any of the wires! We also soldered them in, those butt connectors suck ass, and if you have HIDs while the winjets are out of the car is a great time to install those H7 bulbs in but after doing the DRL mod would be best. Also I installed my ballasts for HIDs right on the back of the headlights if you have 3m adhesive that's the best way it looks really clean.

Thanks again for all the useful info. I definitely plan on doing the mod before I put the headlights in, and it's all going to be soldered. The last thing I need are the butt connectors coming loose while the lights are in the car and then I'd have to go in and try to fix things in such a tight space. No thanks, I'd rather do it right the first time.

I have a Morimoto HID kit on order so I will be putting that in after I do the DRL mod. Speaking of installing the ballasts on the back of the headlights. I actually saw a pic of that before. I think it may have been on fteightysix.com if I'm not mistaken. That's an awesome idea as it'll keep things nice and tidy. Thanks again

Yup, that's where I got the idea from  especially with a morimoto or Diode dynamics one it looks dope, get some 3m adhesive tape while your at it:
http://www.diodedynamics.com/store/s...nting-hardware

It's worth the extra $2.00 to have them

That's what I used.

Yup, the DD and Morimoto kits definitely look great, and their small size helps in terms of getting them mounted behind the headlight. As for the 3M, I have a big roll of automotive grade 3M, spoiler / lip kit mounting tape that I bought in the past. I'll probably butt up 2 or 3 pieces of that to make a larger 'patch' surface. That stuff will hold anything.

Super excited to get going on this. I'll probably do it over the Christmas Holidays, assuming my Morimoto kit makes it in on time.

Just wondering, did you get the DRL mod from fteightysix or was it the kit from Ebay?

I just got a pair of Winjets and want to do the mod as well.

Let us know how your mod goes!

I actually bought the lights and the kit from another forum / club member. He just bought them and decided that he would bake, paint and install halos in his stock lights instead. Essentially, I'm not sure if it's an eBay kit or from fteightysix, but if I were to guess, it's most likely the latter.

That being said, both the eBay kit and the new fteightysix kit are exactly the same. FRSBRZGT86FAN posted a link above to a thread with an explanation as to how this new kit has to be set up. Not sure if you had a chance to look at it, but here is the direct link to the youtube video -

I probably won't get around to doing the install until sometime during the holidays, but I can definitely post and let you know how it went when it's done.

They are both exactly the same. In fact I believe I was the first customer to get the V2 (same as the one from ebay) after speaking to Thomas on the phone. The difference is the customer service is straight up better from @fteightysix than the eBay guy. The only difference they did for me was solder some pins on because I asked as such which you do not need. The original mod was more complicated I believe.

This is the V1, if I remember correctly it came with a white wire, and a diode that's heat shrink wrapped that goes inline with a red wire in the headlight and requires repinning the connector in the winjets and is kinda complicated and not worth it:

This is the v2 which is now on ebay and on fteightysix which has a white red and blue wire which requires no repinning all the wiring is contained within the headlight and is now $20 instead of the V1s $65 which I paid anywho and let it go because I got the V2 from them instead, it comes with those butt connectors and those t-taps to clamp onto the headlight wire for power:

Hopefully @fteightysix can chime in to help you guys I'm no expert, and again I ended up getting it preinstalled when I screwed up, but it works perfectly on my friends car, and works awesome on mine preinstalled (note they don't do preinstalls anymore)

I'll chime in here to say that I wouldn't worry about the LED life either. I think it's safe to say that most people drive more during the day, putting most of their miles on the car when the DRL's are already ON. If there was an issue with the life of the DRL LED's on the Winjets, I'd think we'd have heard people complaining about it by now. The Winjets have been out for a couple years now.

I have Winjets on my car with the DRL mod and love them! I've gotten so many compliments on the look. Highly recommend!

I haven't done mine yet, but from the threads that I've read, just follow the video that I posted, NOT the printout. The video shows exactly what to do. Here's the link again -

Hope that helps

Oh man, that looks dope!!! I just got my Morimoto HID kit in yesterday. I can't wait to get working on my headlights :happyanim:

Thanks for the chime in btw. I was thinking about that too, and yes, we do most of our driving in the day (unless you're Takumi Fujiwara of course) so the night usage of the DRL LEDs will be negligible in comparison. Cheers!

Follow the V2 video that's the easiest and best way

Yup, mine has the Morimoto 5500k HID bulbs / ballasts + DRL mod. The HID bulbs match really close to the LED strips.

One thing that I thought was crazy after installing, is how low the headlights come adjusted from winjet. I had to raise them _a lot_ .... they were pointing at the ground. I still don't have them quite high enough. Make sure you use a 8mm socket on a socket wrench to adjust, trying to use a screw driver will just take years...

Sounds awesome! I assumed 5500K would be pretty similar in colour to the LEDs, so it's good to hear that's actually the case.

In terms of the lighting adjustment, you're actually the second person to mention this to me. It's strange that Winjet ships their lights like that. Guess they have their reasons :iono:
