Quick questions about OFT
 

Hi all,

Sorry, I know that these are rudimentary questions, but there is a ton of data to sift through and I wanted to hopefully get some quick answers since there is a time-sensitive deal going on now with OFTs.

I want to pick one up, and the price from Vishnu is $450+ shipping, but there are a handful in the classifieds going for $400 shipped right now as well. Is there any benefit to getting a new tablet over a used one? Are there any versions of the software/hardware that have changed? Since it's all open source, I assumed that they're all the same, but I don't want to buy a used one and get stuck with an outdated version or miss out on new maps/updates. Likewise, I don't want to overpay.

Also, I see that stage 1 is generic, and stage 2 is more specific. For a DD car, is stage 2 too aggressive? My only mods are a drop in, inlet tube, and UEL right now. Maybe an axelback/catback in the future.

Functionally, a used OFT is identical to a new OFT assuming it is unmarried from the previous owner's car. Beyond that, the benefit of buying a new one from us is getting $500 worth of OFT dollar discounts that you can apply to other parts (header, exhaust, power blocks, FI kits, etc,.) This may or may not be useful depending on if you plan to add additional mods in the future.

I picked up a second-hand OFT from a member here in the member classifieds and haven't had any issues. As far as I know, the tablet itself has not had any new versions, but Shiv has released many different versions (revisions) of the tunes, all of which are free to download from their website.

With your mods, definitely run the UEL Stage 2 tune (assuming your UEL header is catless). You will feel an improvement in performance for sure.

Shiv is going to be releasing a new revision of UEL Stage 2 tunes here pretty soon too and the dyno's he posted show some nice gains over the current off-the-shelf UEL Stage 2 tunes.

Thanks guys, that helps clarify pretty much everything I needed to know. Not sure which route I'll go yet, but I look forward to joining the OFT army soon.

However there has recently been a hardware update (HW100 -> HW200) which is not relavent in this application (for the foreseeable future).

I hope that is for live/dynamic calibration like ETAS INCA. There is nothing like you making a change and seeing the effect immediately :) Not sure if this can be done without using some blend of piggyback + OFT with the piggyback used to do stuff such as cam delta, spark delta, fueling delta etc. You can do if. If you guys cannot then no one can!
@Shiv@Openflash I hope you guys are excited about the Fiat 124. Seems like you can build on the Abarth OFT :)

OFT uses Open Source which others don't use
 

Since OFT uses open source software, tunes can be shared readily without the fear of being sued for sharing without permission. This means there are less restrictions to the sharing of knowledge, like PFI_DI thresholds. These tables weren't in the current RomRaider definitions, but the memory addresses and code was shared with anyone who wished to add it to their definition, and now we can edit those thresholds. There was no patent or copyright violation in sharing RomRaider code, since it is open source. Open source leads to faster freer development, since it isn't limited by old-fashioned patent or copyright laws as much as commercial software is.

Many users might wish same. But most tuner shops wish for their works/tunes to not be shareable, so that every customer pays (and maybe not even once in case of retuning with extra mods). This is not ideal world and won't be one ever, due each side having own interests contradicting/conflicting with those of others.

Got to say the oft guys are the best. I love their business model. They will need to expand to more models for long term success but that means less time to give updated cams to us. So we need to start picking up some of the work and start contributing to the community. Be self sufficient.
