Freezing Windows?
This just dawned on me as I was scraping a layer of frost off my windows yesterday, and see that there's a nice big thick layer on it again this morning..
I broke the nylon slides on my BMW 325i on more than one occasion, trying to get the @#$# window unfrozen buy rocking the power window switch up and down. Good times, driving around w/a window only partially up in sub-0F weather, then eventually pulling the door panel to replace the slides. I got good at it, but it doesn't mean I looked forward to it. Eventually, I learned my lesson and just let'em stay frozen until they thawed. NOW.. I noticed our cars have that neat little feature (translation... "stupid") that automatically rolls the window down a bit when the door opens, then rolls it back up when you shut the door, thereby REQUIRING that the window motor, slides, and track be stressed every time the window freezes, whether you want to stress'em or not. I haven't been through a winter yet, but ours are serious and and this one's on its way. Anyone had any experience w/ frozen windows and had to deal w/ this automatic window cracking function? Any hints or advice? Thanks.. Barry |
Loads of issues with the 13s and early 14s and freezing windows. Still some with the later ones but not as bad. There is a TSB for this that I had done last fall and I never had one single problem all winter. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1389643313

I use a credit card to scrape up ~1 inch above the wiper/seal each time I get in the car.

We swedes put silicone on the window... sills? The rubber sealing around the Windows. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/11...2afc8c8bb6.jpg

I use a de-ice spray if the window is iced over, the yellow can from Prestone.

Problem solved for me. Once I locked the car properly so the steering lock engaged, and then put it in on position the recalibration worked.

FYI I had the window TSB done and my windows still froze this morning...

The crack noise is just the glass sticking to the rubber seal when it is warm. There is quite a bit of pressure pushing against the seal and when it get really warm it sticks a bit. This happens with all frameless windows (if they are sealed well that is) and is nothing to worry about. |
Use dielectric grease on the window weatherstripping. Just a little smear, all along it, is all that's needed. Keeps the water out and no water, no frozen stuck windows.

I just dealt with this for the first time today... Went down/up okay when I got into it in the garage. By the time I drove to work, it froze over with the windchill. It was 45 deg F and rainy in Chicago on Saturday. Come Monday morning, 6 deg F! Luckily I work in a warehouse kept at 65 deg F, so I was able to pull in through an overhead door and let the FRS thaw out.
