TRD exhaust
I live in canada so things are prob more expensive than the states. Got quoted 1.4k installed(tax included) for the trd exhaust from scion parts and service. Is this overpriced ?

It's not overpriced if you are getting it brand new and installed by a dealership. TRD exhaust brand new is about $1000 the exchange rate is about $1000 USD to $1300 CAD. That's just for the exhaust not including installation so after labor costs and what not are all added up, you are saving money compared to USD prices.

I once was gonna get a TRD exhaust and have the dealer install it but.....I did some research and figured I could get a better aftermarket exhaust for that $1000.00 price. Service writer at the dealer suggested the same thing. So I'm saving up for a Perrin Catback 2.5.

The TRD is a very nice mid range sound exhaust that is of a know quality. If you have the dealer install it then it has a warranty there is also no fear that they will try to use it as an excuse to void other components warranty.
With the exchange rate and inexcusably high shipping costs you are going to pay big for even some of the Ebay knockoff crap. See if you can buy a quality used exhaust (be careful) or bite the bullet and spend the money on new. |
Some people absolutely hate the TRD exhaust. Look up reviews or audio clips of the exhaust note before you make the final decision. I know that "EverydayDriver", an online car review channel, was really saddened by that exhaust.

Way back I was looking at the TRD and Perrin as my exhaust choices and I ended up going with neither of them after doing exhaustive research and sound clip listening. Unfortunately the age old adage holds true, "you get what you pay for." Generally speaking the more coin you drop the more interesting and complex the exhaust sounds become. I shelled out for the Cosworth stage 1.1. Its expensive, but not the most expensive out there. It all depends what you want and what you can afford. I wanted a sound which was not "subaru boxerish" that had high notes, low notes (full range of sound) as well as some crackles and pops. The ultimate and most $$$ would be a titanium exhaust or comparable. See @supra2nv for his build thread and total awesomeness, even with his even newer exhaust! |

TRD exhaust not worth $600+
I love mine. Only other one I loved more is the borla header+exhaust (I think). Too loud for my taste though. Anyway TRD exhaust is quiet vs other exhausts, it isn't even great for performance. Only up it has is warranty. If its that pricy and you dont want to pay that much, dont get it. Spend money on better exhaust that DOES something. TRD gives you like 3-5hp iirc. |

Find one you like, if you can afford it, buy it. If you can't, save up for it. I've gone through 5 exhausts, and have another one coming. Been happy with 2 of them, but the 2 were just too loud for the neighbourhood I live in, and they were cop magnets. If I could do it all over again, I'd probably just go for the TRD, have it installed by the dealer and enjoy warranty with it. And I don't necessarily mean a claim being denied, I mean if the exhaust has a defect or whatever, I drive 2 minutes to the dealership and have them sort out getting me a replacement, instead of sending the exhaust to the US, or Japan on my dollar. |
FWIW I have the TRD exhaust on my 10 series and I love it. I have a PLM EL header as well, I've gotten quite a few compliments on how it sounds from people just comming up to me that have seen me around.

Bought a used TRD system locally for $300 and picked it up. Owner said 4k on it and didn't even look like it was installed. It's great quality so I wasn't worried about that. No dings or anything on the tips. Get used and save a bunch of money
