Asphalt FR-S detailed in Charlotte NC

Thanks to the network of detailers online, and the hard work of Hamza and CU2Mike, I've received several calls recently regarding new car preps on FR-S's and BRZ's, specifically asking for OptiCoat/OptiGuard. Since it's rare that a client ever comes to me requesting a particular product, I did some digging around and found this forum along with all the 86's detailed and coated by Mike in CA and Hamza in the Great White North!

This was one of the first FR-S's I'd seen in person, and it is a stunning little car. The proportions are spot on, it's low and aggressive and the interior is all business. This car was dropped off to me on Friday evening, so I got started on the interior right away.

Everything was vacuumed thoroughly, then the seats, carpets and mats all got 303 Fabric Guard to protect them from spilled beverages and reduce the chances for staining. After curing overnight, I poured some water on one of the mats to show what this product can do. Liquids sit right on the surface for easy cleanup!

Unfortunately, none of my other interior pics came out well. The next morning I proceeded with a foaming of Chemical Guys Citrus Wash Clear to remove any existing wax or glaze that might have been present, then hand washed with 3D Pink Soap.

After drying the car, I clayed with Clay Magic Blue and used ONR for a clay lube. Overall the car was contaminant free. This was from the glass, the worst of it. Really not bad considering some I've seen.

Once the clay step was done, I taped off the car and got ready for polishing. The paint on this car was in great shape, with only a handful of defects that needed attention. Most were too light for my point-and-shoot camera to really capture. Polishing was done with Optimum Polish on a green Uber pad, with a few areas getting Meguiar's D300 on an Optimum cutting pad first.

After polishing, the car was pulled into the sunlight to inspect.

The OptiGuard coating was applied to the paint and glass first, then the wheels were removed so they could be coated inside and out. First they were cleaned with Griot's Heavy Duty wheel cleaner and Stoner's Tarminator.

After they were coated, the tires were dressed with Optimum OptiBond tire dressing cut 1:1.

While the wheels were off, the wheel wells were cleaned as well. The driver's rear well also had a large scuff in the plastic, that's what you're seeing in the pictures.

Exhaust tips were cleaned with Klasse All-in-One, Q-tips and a MF towel.

The car was delivered the following day, so please excuse the overcast pictures.

Sadly, I thought when my asphalt FR-S was going to get 'detailed' by the dealership it would look something like that. What I got instead was a bunch of paint swirl and holograms on the doors (the doors are bad). I felt like an ass complaining to my salesman about it and he only said 'we'll get it taken care of'. No explanation and no apology. I think that's what disappointed me the most because he assured me their guys were good and they weren't!

I work for a very large Toyota Dealer, and you don't see them detailing it. Plus I'm good friends with the Detail Manager:(

You should. It's definitely worth doing for new cars.

Hey Mike, nice job bro. Good to see you here.

Hey bud, what's up! I watched your video last night, incredible job on that one you did. I have another one in the same color coming tonight, so I'm going to try HD Polish on that one instead of the Optimum.

Awesome work. I've worked at BMW and Mercedes dealerships. I wouldn't get your car detailed at a dealership. If it's good work, its going to be very expensive. Most of the time it's going to be poor work.

Gotta love the Opti-Coat beading.

So how much do you charge for this full treatment? I could drive up from Charleston on a thursday night/friday morning and hangout at my sister/brother in laws place for the weekend.
