Too vague to diagnose on the forums, the hard stop smell must be brakes burning

humfrz 10-28-2015 01:38 AM

I'd suggest you take your car up to speed and apply the brakes hard for a couple of cycles. Then get out and smell and feel (carefully) each wheel.

You may be able to detect whether or not you have one wheel (brake) that is overheating.

I'd also suggest you take your car into a shop to have a brake inspection ...... maybe your brake pads are toast or you have a caliper that is sticking.

Are you sure it's not an burning oil smell? If so and you have a manual then check for a leaky cam cover plate.

Interesting. Last week I test drove a 2013 manual w/ 16,500 miles on it w/ "accident history" per Autocheck at a local Chevy dealership. Drove great, and was sold on the model.. just not this particular car. Funny thing is, when I pulled over to check on some directions back to the dealership, I noticed a burning oil type smell while idling. Not noticeable at all when driving. Mentioned it to the dealer and he made the usual "Oh, that's nothing.. probably just a little overspill from an oil change or sumpin'.." noises. I walked away.

Fast forward.. found one, certified, at a Toyota dealership and bought it; 2013, manual, 23,000 miles. I've been driving it since Saturday (5 days so far). Every once in a while, I get a whiff of the same smell when I'm sitting and idling at a stop. Is this a known defect? Can you tell me more?

Thanks.. new here. Glad to have found these boards.

Did you get rust proofing done at the time of purchase?

I got rust-proofing on my first FR-S and in the early weeks/months it would smell a bit when I pushed it and the engine heated.

The second one I told them not to rust proof the engine bay and it didn't smell as much.

I drive the piss outa my car everyday and I smell somthing "burning" its been 40,000km and I know im not burning oil I keep an eye on that. I think it is just hot exaust gas as I have no cats.

Hotrodheart 10-29-2015 06:15 PM

How new is your car? If its brand new you may just have that "new FR-S/BRZ" burning smell which can last for a while.

Mine smells of burning oil or something after driving it for awhile, not even hard though. I'm sure it isn't the actual oil, but it comes from the hood and theres black ashy stuff directly below (on the car's actual panel) directly below the oil can thing. Normal?

Black ashy stuff would never be normal. Could you have a belt out of alignment that is dusting off? If there is actual ash then something is actually burning and that can't be good.

Which oil can thing - oil filter, or oil pan?

What is this actual panel of which you speak? I'm thinking possibly exhaust leak but...

A picture is worth a thousand vague words.

The metal thing has some black stuff on it and it smells strange.

Bring pictures, @HachiRo!

I'll post tomorrow morning as the way I parked won't let me open the hood lol and it's night :( but I mean the panel at the bottom of the car. Like the thing between the ground and the engine lol okay I'll just get pics.

Dude what did we tell you about describing your dates?

@Ultramaroon @Tcoat

Here you guys go. Hopefully it isn't too dark, but this is what I'm talking about. Bought the car used 15,000 miles ago and there was a bit there before. Now it's a lot more .-.

I do have to include that my car makes a noise like in this video. Not the cricket noise, but that loud almost clacking sound, but not engine knock-like.

You're too funny. It's not really a skid plate but you can call it that. Try to take a picture of the stain. My money's on exhaust leak.

Edit: That looks like an oil leak. Grit and dust sticks to it.

Yep belt. Looks like stock pulleys though so weird it is stripping it like that. I would get it in and have that checked.

This is gonna sound terribly dumb, but I bought the car used and it's at 52,000 miles currently, lol yes I drive a lot. But I bought it used from a non-Toyota dealer (Nissan). Would it still have warranty under Toyota? Or would I just bring it into Toyota to have it inspected first then pay whatever fee? Never been through a dealership for service so I'm new to the process.

It's an accessory belt, so it's highly unlikely to be covered under the powertrain warranty (which is the longer of the two warranties).

I'd take it to an independent Subaru shop, because it'll probably be way cheaper than a dealership.

Belts are a wear item so unless something else failed and caused it, it won't be covered under warranty anyway. Not a huge expense and at that that mileage not really even a surprise.

Ah, okay. Any estimated price on getting it looked at and fixed?
It'd more than likely be one of the pulleys loose or something if it's shredding like that right?

I'd guess it'd be around 150ish dollars. About an hour of labor, and the cost of a new belt.

No idea what it would cost because I have done my own belts for 40 years. May not be anything loose. Didn't realize the mileage you had when I first speculated. Once a belt wears to a certain point they can start to go fast as the tension pulley just doesn't put enough pressure on anymore and it starts to slip a little. I would guess from the pics that yours is slipping quite a bit.

Ah. I'll call up local performance shops around on Monday and hopefully see what's up.
Thanks for all the help guys and any other tips or comments are appreciated!

No worries about sounding dumb. I do it all the time. :D I don't know the answer but I'm curious. Did the Nissan dealer say anything about the original warranty being transferable?

If it's a front cover oil leak, what could be done and how dangerous is that? I feel like it's oil related because with the last oil change I got, there was quite a ring of oil around the little holder thing (Im terrible with terms).

And not a thing. I asked and they kept talking about their own and it got annoying lol.

Could be (I really could use a higher resolution monitor) but from what I can see the particles all look pretty regular in size and shape. Either way it should be checked out.

Yup belts are wear items, unless he can say the tensioner was broken and weird sounding from day one

If it is then it will have to be resealed. Again not a huge task. The good news is it would be a warranty job. Not a major problem as long as you check your oil on a regular basis. If it is a leak it isn't a horrible one or you would see oil all over the place down there. Reach down there a wipe a finger through it and see if it is either sticky or slippery.
The oil around the filter is not a big deal it happens when they pull the filter (that is why the filter base is shaped the way it is). Just means they are sloppy in their clean up.
