Yep Speed by Design (SBD)

shdobxr 10-26-2015 09:16 AM

In the future I was checking out other turbo kits from Ptuning, Crawford.... but this SBD kit is much less expensive.

Please I dunno how I feel about putting a mitsu turbo on the subaru. Silly I know, but it's like dropping a roush charger kit on a camaro.

TSwiftgavemecrabs 10-26-2015 10:03 AM

It's working well enough for IN HEELS that you asked about it lol

Oh for sure. Not dogging the car at all. It was one of the nicer builds I've seen on the road. I had just not heard of the SBD kit.

They have the Garrett gt30 upgrade for $1000 more if that makes it better lol

shdobxr 10-27-2015 08:08 AM

Well I definitely like the price point. I think the ptuning kit is sorta high. Then there is the whole debate as to the best location for a turbo given the heat issues with the FA20. If you know this person. I would like to ask how they are setup. And if they did some sort of modification for heat soak problems. Like rb6freak has done with his ptuning build.

You get what you pay for. That car put down 233 whp at 10psi on our dyno, 100 whp less than our turbo kit.

shdobxr 10-27-2015 10:52 AM

Hey Freddy, I am local to your shop. Haymarket. I have been wanting to come by and check out the garage.

Come on by! We are open Monday-Saturday 9AM-5PM. We would be happy to give you a tour and give you a ride in our shop turbo FRS. PM me if you have any questions.

Sounds good. :)

Hi Shdobxr! Was that you on Route 28 with me?

I have only had the kit a few days. Yes, you get what you pay for. Although the SPD kit goes to 12psi, I wanted mine capped at 10psi (to be safe) and am running on stock clutch, injectors, etc. I know 233whp sounds low - but honestly, I just love the sound of a turbo and the extra 73whp is a bonus (for me). I can certainly feel the difference. Again, I wasn't looking to get crazy HP out of it, so this is the perfect kit for ME. If YOUR intention is power- I would defintely look into the ptune Kit. As far as heat, I have some heat wrap on the important parts as well as a turbo blanket (but still need to install that). With all that said, I've got less than 2k miles on the kit, so I can't really give a good review yet as far as pros/cons. This is my first (aftermarket) turbo, so I have no way to compare it to other brands or setups (sorry). Not sure if any of this helps - but wanted to add my two cents. :o)

limitedblkwrx 10-27-2015 11:43 PM

If I am spending 7k+ on a turbo kit ill probably go with FBM premium or JDL, because I like the top mount turbo location. @shdobxr

Yep that was me. Not too many 86 cousins on the road. Very clean car I must say. Good luck with the kit. Yeah I've had more than 400 hp cars in the past. Not looking for that in this car unless I wanted to swap a V8. Being local to ptune is a good benefit and I was going to install the kit myself unless the install price is right.

I liked your quad exhaust out the back. What is that a 3 inch back from the turbo? Or axle or catback?

Rear faring kit too?

Going to start off with prepping for heat with an upgraded radiator and oil cooler to prep for the added heat, clutch then drop it with some kW v3's.

This would be till next year when I plan on moving closer in.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions regarding the kit Freddy.

Funny side note : Driving my car I was waiting for the boost to kick in. Sadly there was none. But someday.

Nice shop too!

Alot of stock subarus came with Mitsubishi turbos such as the TD04 that came in the 2003 wrx (I owned one). There have been several other ocasions where they have used Mitsu turbos in the past on subarus that came stock that way.

My pleasure! I understand the feeling every time I drive a customer's Ptuning turbo S2000 then get in my stock S2000 :(

Side note: MrC just told me that we were driving on the low boost map, probably only 10 psi.

14 PSI is high boost, what put down 327whp. When we were test driving that was on low boost, probably around only 10 PSI.
