Got my windows tinted and there is a large gap. Is this normal?

I got my windows professionally tinted yesterday and at first glance I thought they looked great and drove off the lot a happy man. But when I got home and took a closer looked I realized there were large gaps between where the window ends and where the tint ends.

I contacted the shop today and this is what they told me:

Some vehicles have a gasket that gets in the way there of the window operation. I had our best installer on it and I know he always gives as much coverage as possible. If you want to swing it by tho and discuss in person let me know
Is this a known issue with the twins? Or should I demand a refund. Can I even demand a refund? I feel like they're just going to tell me tough luck. This is my first time doing something like this so I don't know my "rights".

There are some cases where you'll leave a little spacing, but this seems like too much IMO

They were probably trying to stretch a roll of tint just a bit farther and make it work

Ummmm.. Yeah that don't look right, it should be right up to the edge, with these windows. There sould be a slight gap or no gap between the tint edge and the window edge.

For what it's worth the gap is the exact same size on both sides. It seems intentional.

I say go back and get it redone. My tint goes all the way to almost the edge on both the side and top. Had my tints for almost 2.5 years, no issues what so ever.

YamahaR86 10-16-2015 05:46 PM

I'll take a picture of my dealership tint when I get out of work and get home if I remember. It goes all the way over and there's tiny edging. Had the car for 2, almost 3 years now and no problems.

ryoma 10-16-2015 05:51 PM

definitely not normal. my tint goes all the way to the edge as well. there's no gap at all.

If they refuse to fix it/refund me what are my options? Can I call my bank and tell them to reverse the charges?

Doubt you'll be able to get a full refund. If anything, you might get the material cost refunded? Probably not labor because what's done is done, which is fair I would think.

If you want a FULL refund and you paid by check, if they haven't cashed it yet, you might be able to stop check for like $20. If by CC, you might be able to get the full refund if you open a merchants dispute.

If you got it done at a reputable shop, they should fix it for you. However, try to be respectful and not beligerant when you point it out

That is a half-assed job. My windows are tinted all the way up without any gap.

Vesalera 10-16-2015 08:51 PM

Being a tinter myself, I'd say that is a wacky job. The tint should sit flush, you should of received an invoice with life time warranty on any issues. Go back and get it redone if you are unsatisfied.

Mr.ac 10-16-2015 10:12 PM

Yeah, I would take it back and have it redone.
Looks to me like they had the new guy work on it.

brzzy 10-16-2015 10:16 PM

Yeah no that's brutal. Mines totally flush/tucked.

I'd get your money back.

I've never seen a tint job like that before and I've had all of my cars over the last few years tinted.

I'm sure once the manager sees it, they will fix it. Front doors are quick and easy.

NWFRS 10-16-2015 11:06 PM

What are we looking at exactly?

Can you take a picture with the door open? It's impossible (for me anyway) to see anything. It looks like a tinted window pressed up against the window gasket...

02.ACCORD.DUDE 10-16-2015 11:13 PM

Gap definitely looks too large... Best of luck on getting it fixed, I took mine off recently but maybe another poster can post a picture of there's that you can use as a comparison to show whoever tinted the windows in case they're reluctant to fix.

Highlighted for you.

OP, if you still want I can take some pictures tomorrow since I'm off. My car is too dirty right now since it's been raining all week and people would talk smack about my dirty car pictures.

Here you go OP. Just finished wiping down my car finally. It's dealership tint I believe, had it on my car since I took it off the lot in 2013.

Passenger and Driver Sides.

ryoma 10-17-2015 06:11 PM

this is my tint, it has no gap at all.

Take it back and have them redo it. Just my 2 cents! ;)

stevesnj 10-17-2015 09:23 PM

Why didn't he contact you to let you know they would have to cut a large gap?

zc06_kisstherain 10-17-2015 10:27 PM

i will definately get it redone. that's not right. if they dont do it, i would post bad negative feed back on internet lol

Mr.ac 10-17-2015 10:37 PM

Holy cow batman. Yeah that is a bad job. Take it back no dealer should have done a shity job.

Doesn't seem like a dealer in OP's original. Seems like one of those shops that specialize in tinting cars. It would be simple if it was a dealer though since they want to avoid bad rep.

AlexWood 11-02-2015 03:14 PM

They'll probably say that the weather stripping will mess up the film so they left a large gap to ensure it won't rub off. It's not ideal but I would bet that's the story they'll go with
