Toyota Officially Registers "86" Trademark
2 Attachment(s)
Here is the latest installment in the FT-86 naming saga. The question all along has been "What will Toyota call the production version of the FT-86?" Will it retain the FT-86 badge? Will it even be badged as a Toyota (rather than a Scion)?
If this trademark is to be any indication, it shows that the car's production name may retain the "86" portion of the concept car's name. Filed by Toyota on December 23, 2010, the trademark shows that Toyota was or is serious enough about retaining "86" in the name to trademark a logo. This is the same stylized 86 which we saw in the center of a bigger logo late last year. That larger logo showed a cross section of a boxer engine, featuring one horizontally opposed piston on each side and the now trademarked number 86 logo inserted in the center where the crankshaft would be. I like the Previous logo
|
I just read yesterday on Autoblog that this was going to be a Scion.

They're months behind. |
Maybe I missed it, but did someone see this?
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/types/tm/t-os/...demark=2550743 Trademark for "Toyota 86" for "Automobiles and structural parts thereof." Interesting.... |
Subaru's name for the car?
I found this name on the same page:
http://www.ipo.gov.uk/t-find-number?...emark=E9226101 Could be the name for their car: Subaru 2000 RS can't find anything about it @ google publication date is november 2010. anyone ever heard about it? |
^ are those for usdm though?
|
Toyota 86? Not bad.
|
quick google search for "structural parts thereof, automobile" turned up the below page.
http://www.trademarkia.com/company-t...51320-page-1-2 And LOOK its TOYOTA. Scroll down about 1 page and you'll also see the "Supra" name, so all is pointing towards 86 in the name of the vehicle, or at least some kind of designation So being that now, they can choose to mix and match, say a "86 FR-S(Sport?) But the 86 newly trademarked is definitely a Logo Toyota wants to lock down. I wouldn't mind seeing that logo in the steering wheel, of course darkened, and or possibly etched in black leather or similar. |
of course it's toyota? scion and lexus are brands, but they're not companies.
|
Wow, I didn't know they were taking the boxer part so serious. I like.

It would be kinda cool if that logo replaced the toyota logos. Kind of like the impalas do.... maybe
|
Agree^ I like the new one a bit more than the one with the pistons. The first one is too big
|
No boxer pistons on the logo, maybe that's so they can bring out the inline 4 or 6 version. Maybe I WILL get one now.
|
Likely going to See a Europe Toyota, Scion US thing happening here. It saves them cost but pisses us off.

I could see this as a side logo on the car, like the "5.0" on the new 5.0L Mustangs.

I'd prefer it had a real name rather than any alpha numeric bullshit, but at this point I'd be happy as long as it stayed a Toyota rather than a Scion.

I thought latest report was that is would be badged "FT-S" and under the Scion brand in the US.

cccc on a positive note, this could eliminate the scion vs toyota debate.. if all of them have the 86 badge only, and no toyota or scion hehe |
They should use this badge instead of Toyota badge. It reminds me of Altezza if they do so.

Would you still buy a scion if it had that 86 logo on it instead of scion logo? (talking about the ft 86) |
I've said this before, I think the 86 logo is a bit tacky and won't age well.
On a side note, I'm curious what the actual chassis code will be. They go all retro with the 86, but what if people start calling it by its Subaru or Toyota chassis code which is totally different? And if they actually incorporate 86 into its chassis code it will feel super-contrived... Quote:
It saved Toyota and Subaru (two mostly separate companies) development costs, but having Toyota split marketing, sales and delivery doesn't save money. |

If the new IS is gonna be based off the same platform, then XE33? |

And Subarus typically use two letters (I don't know what the numbers are for in Subarus). I know GC is first gen Impreza coupe. But I don't know what the 8 in GC8 is for. Will be interesting to find out how this turns out, but I'm betting neither will have '86' in it... So will it really be an 86? |
I still hope they go with "Sprinter" or "Celica" for the name. Gives it more feeling. Not a fan of the whole number/letter naming. They can do what they want with the chassis code but I'd guess they'll still go with something like "F[]-86"
|
I don't care what they call it. Just sell me one.

Sedan: GC Coupe: GM Wagon: GF Secondly, 8 is the engine type in the car. Here's the list 2 = 1.8L 4 = 2.2L 6 = 2.5L 8 = 2.0L turbo For an example: My car would be GM6. GM for coupe, 6 for engine type. ...and if you wanna go more in depth, there's more letter/numbers after that. Bunta's (Ini-D) car is GM8F28D... but who's asking. lol Hope that helped |
Celica 86? Anyway at first glance the logo looks like BS to me. Anyone felt that same :bonk:
|
Maybe they will use it on the wheels, small badge on center of every wheel. Nice to see some things moving forward, we just may see this car in production after all :p
|
I thought it was -confirmed- this thing was going to be a Scion in the U.S.? Or is that still speculation?
Like I've said before, the badging matters little to me. I mean, if comes branded as an 86, that shit will stay on the car because I like it, but any and all Scion badges are being removed, with possibly -TOYOTA- badge being placed on the front grill, if I can make it look right. |
It was never set in stone weather it would be a Scion or Toyota.
To me, its a Toyota 110%. Fucking Scion lol. |
