Just adding my 2 cents to the car-guy vs non-car-guy argument. This is just my opinion but a non-car-guy becomes a car-guy the moment they view a vehicle as anything more than a means to an end. Key examples of this moment are when you want to drive just to enjoy driving or when you see a nice car you haven't seen before and you stop to find out more about it.

I agree 100%

Most of these cars are bought by the non car guy type. If you need to manually shift gears to get the "driving experience" then you are still missing the point.

I will shut up again.

It's an indisputable fact that being more engaged with the driving experience is well... a part of the driving experience - just by definition of the word.

If you don't want to do it, that's fine, but the fact remains that "for the driving experience" manual is the way to go. If you look at limited edition Porches, or even the limited BRZs, they only come in manual.

Like I said, if you gotta DD in traffic or just the routes you drive make driving manual a pain rather than a pleasure, then go for the automatic. Otherwise, go for the manual because it's a part of the driving experience, and this car is about that.

It is an indisputable fact that you may feel more engaged but that does mean it is a fact much less "indisputable" for everybody else. If you feel the need to constantly move a hand and foot to do what the computer can much faster and more precise then you then by all means feel more engaged. Shifting gears is something that people have done since the invention of the car and is not part of the experience but a simple mechanical operation. Again I will point out that I am only referring to these cars and a very few others when I say that the autos are every bit as fun as the manuals. Some autos just plain suck (I am looking at you Mitsubishi) and do indeed take away from the "experience" but the 86 is not one of them.

I dunno guys.

I feel pretty engaged with my car when I'm running through backroads and mountain passes at high XX to XXX speeds. Guess I shouldn't feel engaged since I don't have a stick and 3rd pedal.

No. We would then exceed the Canadian hot lava quota.

I'll get right to it. I am by no means a 'car guy' when it comes to the knowledge of what makes cars tick. For the past year though, I've considered getting an FRS. The hype is so great that I couldn't help but be lured into it.
1. I don't know how to drive stick
2. This would be my only DD
3. My current and only car I've had is an automatic 07 chevy cobalt
4. My driving would be mainly highway (Phoenix, AZ)
5. Married but not planning on a family soon

Also, I am very very much interested in LEARNING and I believe having a new, nice car like this will help my motivation to do so.

Question is, should I go for the AT FRS or am I better off looking for 'just another sedan'?

In addition to considering the FR-S, if you're:

- not a "car guy"
- don't drive stick
- drive mostly highway miles

I'd highly recommend test driving the new GTI with DSG gearbox. For highway miles, it's significantly quieter and more comfortable than the FR-S. It's easier getting in/out of the car. It will haul more people and cargo. The interior is nicer, especially in Autobahn trim. The turbo engine will feel much stronger in the midrange. Fuel economy should be comparable.

You give up the sharpness and balance of the FR-S, but it's probably worth the tradeoff for most people who're just looking for a fun sporty car.

Can someone define "Car Guy" for me.

We talking about this guy?

Go test drive it.

Doesn't matter what anybody says on here. You have to find out for yourself if it's the car you want.

Yes. Yes we are.

He's what you call fully automatic.

Tapatalk - because smoke signals would be too easy.

Engaging isn't the word I would use but perhaps I would use involving instead. For me, it's also a control thing because I'm a control freak so I love having that extra little bit of control in the MT.

As some people have mentioned, this is a great car but not for highway.

I live in a large city where basically i never have to use the highway and just cruise on the streets which is great.

On the highway though i would prefer my honda lol.....the FRS/BRZ/86 is loud on the highway and something i wouldn't want to drive on a highway often personally.

Sure, i use the highway sometimes and sure sometimes i'll drive far which is fine...but to use it on a highway daily....no thanks.
