Toyota 86 Rally Car

I don't recall seeing this posted anywhere else but I just came across this, which blew my mind: A Toyota 86 that is built for rally and has AWD being tested by the legendary Tommi Makinen (my favorite rally driver from the Mitsubishi days).

It seems this is the head of Toyota's idea, Akio Toyoda, and he is looking into getting back into rally. Here is the related article: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/115232

And an article from WRC.com about how Tommi is now the head of the Toyota WRC program! Toyoda says he wants to utilize this for future cars! http://www.wrc.com/en/wrc/news/july/...7--12-12-.html

Bro, didn't you get the memo? Scrape curbs, not gravel!

I love it.

Came across this also a week ago. At 13:34, you can see the paddle shifters on this automatic rally 86. I'm curious what's under the engine.

The GT86 is a good rally car even with RWD. The GT86 just has a great chassis and is engineered great.

The Subaru BRZ is making a name for itself at the All Japan Rally Championship. Is BRZ the ideal track car?
It’s round six of the All Japan Rally Championship and the new 2014 Subaru BRZ is tearing it up in the race series. This weekend at "Tango Peninsula Rally 2014" the Subaru BRZ won its 3rd straight race in the All Japan Rally Championship series. The Tango Peninsula is one of the most scenic spots in Japan, but it didn’t distract driver Kamata Takuma from running another great race.

BRZ may be the ideal rally car
The Subaru BRZ may be the ideal rally car in spite of being only rear-wheel-drive. It features a near perfect weight balance and the the two-door sports coupe has an ultra low center of gravity. This allows BRZ to be pushed hard through the corners in wet or dry conditions. The driver can stay in control and still push the car to its limits.

I've seen that one... in June? July? Tommi Makinen is test driving it right?

Too bad they're pushing front CV axles like V shape and isn't doing so hot... but next concept car... ;)

More along the lines of the old Datsun 240Z Safari Rally Car.

Yeah, I've always been fond of rallying. It's what got me interested in cars in the first place. I've driven the typical rally platforms but I always prefer the smaller cars like the Eclipse (GSX), the Toyota Celica (GT-Four), and the 86. I know they don't have as much clearance/suspension stroke to work with but their shorter wheelbase and lower center of gravity makes a huge difference. I've always felt more in control in my Eclipse than our Evo X doing rally-esque things even though my Eclipse has no aids (even ABS is off). So I can understand why people are starting to prefer the FR-S despite not having AWD.

But I want to reiterate that I know there has been FR-S rally cars but what makes this one unique is that it has AWD and was directed by the president of Toyota himself, which makes it an official project.

I'll take one. Can this be the next release series?

It was in late July. Yeah, I couldn't see how they were able to do it but the angles are probably more extreme like you said. I definitely recognize that engine note to be the Subaru WRC engine though.

Yeah, it's EJ207 alright

This might be old news, but Dirtfish rally school in Washington will let you take their course in a rally prepped brz. Still rwd. If I had the cash, I'd do their 3 day class. Only like 5 hours or less in a classroom, the rest in a car.

BigFatFlip 09-24-2015 04:08 AM

definitely not the first 86 rally car (sad to see the nameless car no longer competing in really America), but may just be the first awd/4wd rally 86.

Unfortunately, I believe this car was only built for demons purposes only. Toyota is still planning to compete in the WRC, just with their Yaris WRC.
