Front License plate

I know there is the front plate relocators that can be bought but I have also see people put the front plate on their dash and was wondering if anyone else does this if they had problems with cops

WhiteFRS69 09-20-2015 12:37 PM

i did this in my old car,

no problems, but IMO it looks tacky

pushrod 09-20-2015 12:38 PM

Putting it on the dash is unsafe in an accident. Might as well put a saw blade on the dash.

Tcoat 09-20-2015 12:40 PM

You may or may not have problems with cops. I don't believe there is any jurisdiction that it is legal though.
Ask yourself, is it worth attracting extra unwanted attention just to not have a plate on the front of your car? You want to hand the cops a written invitation to pull you over?
Besides, I personally think that a plate on the dash just looks ghetto anyway. When your region requires plates and everybody has them nobody notices them on the bumper anyway.

Wraith 09-20-2015 01:29 PM

the first thing I bought for my car was a license plate relocation kit for the front. I hate how the front of the car looks with the stock license plate. But its better than getting a ref ticket when the cops pop you because you have no front licenses plate.

Chen 09-20-2015 01:46 PM

I had mine in the dash. IMO most of the time cops don't notice. When I had mine in the dash I got more attention for it then. My front plate is now in the trunk.

RandomDeception 09-20-2015 01:50 PM

Honestly, a bright license plate looks great on the FR-S (and GT86) grille front and centre in my opinion.

It doesn't look as good for the BRZ grille unless you get one of those license plate holder incorporated plastic bumpers though.

I am with you on this. The side mount messes with my sense of proportion, on the dash looks like something is broken and none just looks weird since I have been seeing plates on the front for 50+ years. A nice frame and tinted cover (also illegal but I take my chances) and I consider my plate in the centre as a cosmetic mod.

So having no front plate visible is actually less noticeable?

How much would a ticket be for that violation?

in my experience. Having a plate in the dash kinda draw your eyes that direction.

In my experience the ticket was 225. But it was a fix-it ticket. I put the plate back on. Went to the traffic place and paid 25 bucks and the ticket was dropped.

It isn't just the price of the no plate ticket that you need to be concerned with. It is the simple fact you are attracting attention to yourself. Where you may get off with not being pulled over or a simple a warning for some small infraction you are now opening yourself up to having more thrown at you.
It is only a licence plate. Center mount it or side mount it and be done.

who cares about the no license plate ticket...

We in California have to deal with cops asking us or forcing us to pop our hoods ( main reason why I stopped modding cars ... and got into competitive pistol shooting) and if they find anything on your engine bay. They send you to the state smog ref ... And worst could brand your car as a gross polluter and have to smog check every year with a test only place or a state run smog ref...

And basically if your smogging with a state ref... You cant even have a freaking radiator cap. If mod is on your engine it better have a carb legal sticker...

Don't give them a reason to pull you over. If you have other mods, that front plate might cost a lot more - removing tints, exhausts, and general harassment.

IMO, It's not worth having a cleaner look. The FR-S has a great place to put the font plate, since it doesn't detract from the lines of the car.

Google is your friend! :D

But seriously, I also ascribe to the "don't give them a reason" philosophy.

Fortunately in Texas they've got an almost all-black plate (with white letters) that blends right in to the grill.

Yea I had the plate relocator from grimmspeed but it got destroyed and a car accident recently I would post before pics but all I have is my iphone whats the easiest way to post a pic off my iphone??

Packofcrows 09-20-2015 10:43 PM

On dash yes. It's a game of Russian Roulette.

Jake360 09-21-2015 04:47 AM

connect it to the passenger visor and flip it down when you drive. i wouldnt do that, but its an option

Jolt182 09-21-2015 05:29 AM

Just don't run the front plate at all. Dont live in fear that a cop is going to pull you over for that. I've left mine off all my cars and never had an issue.

This is certainly an option and many people get away with it for a long time.
But...
Don't come crying and whining that you were harassed, profiled, picked on or in any other way singled out if you do get a ticket for not having it.

8R6 09-21-2015 01:36 PM

this was cool...back in the 90s.

Dake 09-21-2015 01:40 PM

I also always thought the danger in putting the tag on your dash is if you do get nabbed for it, you've essentially told the cop you know the law, and you've chosen to try and circumvent it.

If you don't have a front tag at all, you can at least reasonably play dumb.

I did know a guy who put his front tag and an intentionally broken bracket in his trunk. The rare times he got pulled over he'd tell the cop, "Oh, the bracket just broke off and I haven't had a chance to replace it. It's in the trunk right now if you want to see."

MisterSheep 09-21-2015 01:40 PM

I live in California and laws are much much stricter here. I have had numerous friends get pulled over with no license plate. I would check your local laws because there is a certain distance and height it must be.

MarcFr-s 09-22-2015 12:03 AM

Knock on wood, never put front license plate on my car I bought new in 2004, and not on my Fr-s in Aug of 2013, no tickets. I believe it's a fix it ticket with a small fine. Most of the time I think it comes from parking enforcement, although I've had several parking tickets with no front plate violation. Now watch, I'll get a ticket tomorrow for no front license plate!

steeloyangster 09-22-2015 01:44 AM

I once got a ticket while the car was street parked in front of my house. I walked out to my car to go to work and there was a ticket under my wiper blade. Ever since then I bought the Grimmspeed license plate relocator kit. My OCD symmetry alarms were going off for a couple weeks but eventually it grew on me and now I prefer the look. People do ask me all the time, "Why do you have your license offset?" I just tell them that it's to prevent them from drilling the bumper and doesn't block the radiator.

Tan 09-22-2015 01:53 PM

When I got my FR-S I had to drive it without the front plate a few days.

I got pulled over within 3 hours of driving it out of the dealership. The ticket was something like $130 but I have the option install it correctly, show a photo at court, and have the ticket dismissed. So its basically a fix-it ticket unless you're too rich to bother.

I had to drive without front plate for 1 more week and did not get any attention from cops in that time. Guess sometimes you get unlucky.

Keeping it on dash is very unsafe as @pushrod mentioned. The reason I had to drive my new FR-S without front plates is because I transferred plates from my old FR-S which got T-boned by a red light runner. The impact felt like a punch and sent my glasses off my face. Nothing in the car was where I left it before. You don't want a plate flying in any random direction in a situation like that! Secure it well if you must.

Yup you gotta take the good with the bad when it comes to that!

Timmy_Jones 09-23-2015 10:20 AM

I think in all New England states its required, but I have never run one. I have been pulled over for it...got a warning. I just think the front of the car looks 'right' without it.

MokSpeed 09-23-2015 10:46 AM

Never had a front plate on any of my cars. Never had a problem other than a warning here and there. Never moving out of Texas.

Braces 09-23-2015 11:13 AM

Thank god we don't need front plates in Arizona.

Bamsterman 09-23-2015 12:03 PM

I have never had a front plate in my life and never had any issues. Then again, in FL they don't require one...lol

NyC Zn6 09-23-2015 01:24 PM

Here in NY it is required and they will let you know with a ticket.

Entirely correct.

"CVC 5201. (a) The rear license plate shall be mounted not less than 12
inches nor more than 60 inches from the ground, and the front license
plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground
,
except as follows: ...A bunch of towing/hauling exceptions"

Cal even have rules about headlamp aiming and illumination, a lot of rules actually...

"CVC 24400. (a) A motor vehicle, other than a motorcycle, shall be equipped
with at least two headlamps, with at least one on each side of the front of the
vehicle, and, except as to vehicles registered prior to January 1, 1930, they shall
be located directly above or in advance of the front axle of the vehicle. The
headlamps and every light source in any headlamp unit shall be located
at a height of not more than 54 inches nor less than 22 inches."

"CVC 24407. Multiple-beam road lighting equipment shall be designed and aimed as follows:
(a) There shall be an uppermost distribution of light, or composite beam, so aimed and
of such intensity as to reveal persons and vehicles at a distance of at least 350 feet
ahead for all conditions of loading.

(b) There shall be a lowermost distribution of light, or composite beam so aimed and of
sufficient intensity to reveal a person or vehicle at a distance of at least 100 feet ahead.
On a straight level road under any condition of loading none of the high intensity portion of the
beam shall be directed to strike the eyes of an approaching driver."

Oh, Cal, what won't you regulate.

Super_Scion_86 09-23-2015 04:35 PM

I'm glad I don't have to deal with this in PA. My wife lived in SoCal for a few years, your cops are brutal. She got pulled over twice within the 1st 2 weeks of being there while waiting on Cali's DoT to issue her new plates.
