There's also something beneath this that isn't shown in this photo that has me stumped! Anyone have a photo or illustration that shows what's what in the brz engine?

It's part of the air intake, ie more volume for the front side of the air box. I think it helps equalize the air available, as the engine rpm's vary, and cause pulses in the air being sucked into the intake.

Yep, and also adds to reduce intake noise.

That's purely a resonator that changes the sound of the intake. As for what's below, the only thing I can think of is the header, which is encased in metal heat shielding. Is that what you're asking about?

A resonator of some sort is my guess

Apparently it's just an acoustic box for the sound that goes into the cabin. Wonder what the bollock is though?

The main part in question has nothing to due with the sound generator

CAI and Short ram doesn't have that. Is it better or worse with that part that @LWAA mentioned?
