I think my FR-S was "profiled" by a WSP ......
1 Attachment(s)
Yes, I believe my FR-S was “profiled” by a Washington State Patrolman.
Here is my story, what do you think .. ?? While on our way, for a short three day get-a-way over to the coast of Oregon, we were cruising down Highway 101, in southern Washington. It was a bright, sunny day, very little traffic, on a dry, straight stretch of road, out in the country (see map). I noticed a large, white vehicle coming from the other direction when, all of a sudden, the vehicle's grill lit up like a slot machine in Vegas that had just hit the jackpot. At the same time my radar detector started squawking and mrs humfrz started squawking. As I looked in the rear view mirror, I saw that the patrol vehicle was quickly turning around and coming my way …. real fast. I was hoping he was after a bad boy on up the road. Nope the bad boy he was after was ME. My first thought was to open up the boost on my turbocharger and hit the NOS button to see if I could beat him to the Oregon state line. Then I realized, that I did not have a turbocharger nor NOS, so I pulled over. I was sitting there with my window down, my hands high on the steering wheel, in my brown, checkered, flannel shirt, looking old and harmless. His first words were “I’m informing you that you are being video and audio recorded”. I looked around for the TV crew, thinking I was going to be on an episode of “Bad Boys”, but didn’t see anybody. His next statements were “you were going just a little bit too fast back there in your HOT ROD car”. I clocked you going 68 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.” Right then, after his “hot rod” comment, I figured a “warning” was out of the picture. After I handed over the requested paperwork, he returned with a ticket for $125. Now, my contention is that, if I were driving something like a Buick, I wouldn’t have gotten pulled over nor would I have been given a ticket. What do ya’ll think …. ?? Was my FR-S “profiled” …. ?? Have you had an incidence where you felt your FR-S/BRZ was profiled by law enforcement … ?? humfrz |
I was pulled over in the absolute middle of no where in Ontario in a hot lava frs doing 105km in a 80,
I thought the same thing and asked myself if had have been driving a camry would I have been pulled over, Probably not but that didn't help in court and I still paid the ticket not much you can do now no sence loosing sleep |
But... you were speeding though. :P
I honestly feel somewhat bad for never exceeding the speed limit by over 5 kilometres for more than 10 continuous seconds. :| |
But were you "going 68 MPH in a 55 MPH zone"?
Just kidding, don't answer that. But if the answer is "yes", then there's no point arguing that he "profiled" you because of your car. It's irrelevant what car you were in, since you still were breaking the law. That's akin to saying "It's not fair! Everybody else was doing it too but I'm the one that got in trouble! Therefore, I shouldn't be punished", and we all know that's not a concrete argument. A better argument would be that you weren't speeding, and that he mistakenly clocked the speed of another car in front of you. Unless he can undoubtedly prove that it was you that he clocked with his radar, then you might have a chance. I've made that argument in court before and got the case dismissed. |
Oh, yes, I was most likely going 68 MPH .....:(
I've already paid the speeding ticket ....... :sigh: humfrz |
But... But.... what good did the radar detector do? radar detector that detects radars after being clocked, sweet.

The only time a radar detector might help is if you're in a group of cars (not at the front) and your detector detects radar waves as the cop is clocking a car in front of you. Then, hypothetically, you have a sliver of time to check your speed before he clocks you too. |
I was pulled over in rush hour traffic for "doing aggressive lane changes". The cop saw the numbers and "1morelap" sticker on my car and asked "if I take my driving seriously", to which I said "yes". He then let me off with a warning after he saw my nearly spotless driving record.
When he pulled me over, he said "we are focusing on driver safety this week", to which I said: "what about every other week?". I don't think he heard me. |

I was pulled over in my BRZ by a piece of shit Texas state trooper for doing 71 in a 75 mph zone. I was second in line in a group of cars, and the cop singled me out and gave me a bogus ticket. He admitted he didn't hit me with his laser. He claimed he clocked the whole group going 85, and since I was in the group, I was guilty. I know for a fact the group wasn't going 85 because we were all hemmed in by a truck in the right lane going 71 and an idiot in a minivan who had matched the guy's speed in the left lane and wouldn't let anyone pass. The cop was a lying sack of shit who deserves to have his badge shoved up his ass.
I sometimes have to go down to McAllen on the Mexican border for work, where the hillbilly Texas government has decided to send hundreds of troopers for the express purpose of harassing brown people. I rent a car when I go. I have a real fear that if I drove the BRZ, one of them would pull me over and accuse me of being an illegal Mexican drug dealer and impound my car. |
That stinks. Yes, unfortunately that's quite common behavior from the cops with a car like the FRS/BRZ. I have a similar story. I was driving with the flow of traffic in Weat Orange, NJ when all of a sudden a silver Honda pilot started tailgating me. I was on the left lane of a 2 lane road going downhill and most definitely at least 5 over the speed limit (55mph). I felt uncomfortable so I switched into the right lane and speed up a little bit (~65mph probably). The silver Honda pilot also changed lanes and continued to aggressively follow me barely ~5 feet away from my rear bumper. Up ahead i coasted through a curve in the road. The SUV stayed behind me and after we hit traffic, I heard sirens and saw the red and blue lights from behind me. I was extremely confused because there was no marked police unit behind me. The Honda pilot was the undercover cop. It was a 3-4 year old silver Honda pilot with tinted windows all around (including windshield). After I pulled over into a side street, he was really agitated. When he approached my driver side window, I opened up with something like “hey officer, how's it going "- he cut me off and his first words were “we've been getting calls about... Why are you in such a hurry, .... Where are you going that you speeding soo fast". I was really scared and honestly just started apologizing for going faster than the speed limit. Then he accused me of “evading from the police". He thought I spotted him when I was going UP the him and made a u-turn trying to get away from him or something. This wasn't true because honestly I had no clue where he was. Apparently he saw my FRS going up the hill and made a u-turn and continued to follow me until I returned downhill. After he took my papers, he called in my plates to dispatch and I heard him describing the FRS as “... I have a red TOYOTA coupe pulled over here for speeding..." . I have scion badges on the FRS. I'm pretty sure that he either confused my car for another speeding red Toyota or he profiled a red sports car.
I was luckier than you though because he left me off the hook with a verbal warning. He returned to my window after checking the system and said “i don't why I'm doing this but I'm not gonna write you a ticket... Slow it down ". Then he gave me specific instructions to NOT make a k turn in a driveway and instead make a u-turn at the end of the road. When I did that I noticed him following me for another 5 minutes. But i noticed him 2 cars behind me and this time I set the cruise for 55mph exactly. That's the craziest encounter I've had with a police stop because of the undercover element and due to the agitated officer. Honestly I think he felt bad for when he noticed I was terrified. Probably got a good laugh out of it. I'd look into just getting a court date and paying heftier fine (~$390) and pleading guilty to a no point ticket like ”unsafe driving". That's what I've done in the past (new jersey) |

you need a real radar detector like escort passport max 2

After paying the ticket (which turns into a "referral fee"), I have applied to the State of Washington for a deferral on this ticket. Deferrals are usually granted to drivers with clean records (I haven't had a ticket for over 15 years). The deferral is subject to the driver being a good boy for a period of time. It is my understanding that the upside of a deferral is that the ticket is not reported to DMV nor to the insurance companies..... a bright spot......:) humfrz |

Cops love busting people on 101, I just make sure I'm going the speed limit. Take it as a compliment humfrz, kinda like how you still get carded when trying to buy a six pack. You rebel, you...
|
If you drove an old gray Buick he might have just ignored you and never made that u-turn. However you manned up and acknowledged you were probably speeding.
I was pulled over back in college for going 4mph over the speed limit (34 in a 30). No weaving or aggressive driving. It was approx 2:30 in the morning in a college town. The officer came to my car in record time and stuck his whole head inside my driver window. I think he was trying to get a whiff of my breath to see if I had been drinking or if there were drugs in the vehicle. Luckily I was let off with a verbal warning. I thought this constituted as profiling at the time, but sadly many kids driving around that late at night in a college town are probably coming back from a party or the bar. That same officer has probably pulled over tons of kids and gotten them on more significant charges. This all stemming from speeding. Just don't do it. |
In my piece of shit Corolla, I always drove 10+ over speed limit. Probably most of the time I had it, never really paid attention. Never had any trouble from the cops.
July 4th weekend, a month after I bought the FRS, I was pulled over for going 65 in a 60 mph zone. Attributed that to holiday weekend, orange sports car that stands out in a sea of black, white, grey cars, and.... lost my train of thought. Sucks you got pulled over. :( |
That policeman doesnt have heart. I mean, giving an ticket to a eldery? Come on!!

Not the same thing, but I feel I got singled out by the border patrol on the Swedish side of the Øresund border bridge from Denmark last year.
It was bright and early one lovely morning, well before the rush hours. I had a long way to go and a short time to get there; so I had my sunglasses on, some cool beats on the stereo and a heavy foot when a uniform jumped out from nowhere and waved me aside. -"Step out of the vehicle, please." (In Swedish. Think of the muppet chef.) At this point I figured I was either getting a speeding ticket or being strip searched while having all my stuff pulled out and tossed around. Or quite possibly, both. -"So, where are you headed today?" "Home to Norway." -"Yeah, I saw your plates. Where have you been and for how long?" "Uhm... Denmark, Germany... Places like that... for a week or so..." -"Cool. Anything in the trunk?" "Mostly dirty laundry. Wanna have a look?" -"Nah, that's allright. Say, it's a cool car you've got here!" And he kept talking to me and talking to me about my car, he's read about it and likes it and wants to know what it's like to own one. I told him I've met a lot of interesting people just by showing up in my GT86. He likes that, too. When he starts pulling out a cigarette I politely ask "...are we about done here?" -"Oh, sure. You can go. Sorry for keeping you, I get bored sometimes." |
Lucky you are not in the Slammer with no bail. 68 in a 55 is down-rite dangerous. You should really be more careful. As a matter of fact, you should have your "Hot Rod" impounded and should really be driving a Buick.

Geez Humfrz ... You're giving all of us law abiding twin owners a bad rep. :D:D:D

Out of curiosity, what language was used to communicate there? - A Norwegian coming from Denmark into Sweden. Are the Scandinavian languages similar enough like Portuguese and Spanish or are most people there fluent in those three particular national languages? |
I speed all the time in my white work van and they ignore me. I think "hot rod profiling" is real.
I also haven't received a speeding ticket in my car with a radar/laser detector, PASSPORT 8500 X50, in the 10 years since I have got one and it's saved me many times. |

Get a dashcam (hopefully with gps so it can kinda track your mph) and inform the officer that you have a dashcam that is recording as well and that you can show him what speed you were doing or were on cruise control. That's got me out of a bundle once and I had my GoPro! GoPro doesnt record speed...lol Hit me 2min later...:sigh: Anyway, yeah seems like he tailed you. Had to meet his quota to pay his credit card donut fees (no offense to anyone on the forums), but there are a few turd officers out there. Years back, a CHP (CA HWY patrol) admitted at a recruitment meeting in my college that there have been cases of them being angry and jealous of someone driving a nice car and pulling 'em over. Take it with a grain of salt though, he was bad at jokes. |
fuckin' kids these days, nobody cares what you drive, you were speeding, 13 over is pushing it as it is, 15+ is reckless driving in California for reference
get over yourself /thread Edit: To prevent someone thinking I'm serious, here's a picture of Tcoat I'm using as a free pass http://images5.fanpop.com/image/phot...92-320-294.gif |

I had a drunk guy, smelled alcohol like he dumped it on himself, t-bone me. He had a brief case that he wouldn't let go of the entire time we were there at the scene. Gee, I wonder what was inside it? When the highway patrol came to the scene, I explained how I turned on a green arrow but he would not look at the light for some reason to see I was telling the truth and he gave me the ticket for going through a red light. I obviously took the ticket to court to fight it. While waiting to go into the court room the drunk guy is talking to some other guy and we overhear him saying something about going to eat after this guy. Didn't think anything of that. Come to find out this guy was a surprise witness that nobody knew about that supposedly stopped and gave drunk guy his info and then left the accident scene..... :mad0260: Yeah that whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth for highway cops for a while. I was 16 and was driving a older Camaro and the drunk guy probably 50 and a newer Cadillac or Buick. I think it was more I was the younger driver thing as that cop just didn't care what I had to say about what happened. |

Although, he did give me a "senior discount" ....... he wrote me up for 65 MPH instead of 68 MPH (so, it was 10 over the speed limit)......:iono: humfrz |

As a chp buddy of mine said once he only targets cars with radar detectors. Why? Because 110% they are speeding and bought it for that sole purpose of speeding.
Every single ticket that tried to contested he showed up and soon as he mentioned the radar detector the judge rules in the cops favor. Now those he ticked and clocked them with his radar gun and contested in court he loses because of some other factor usually they say they where going with the flow of traffic |
I like my radar detector so much I hardwired it into my FRS. It has become one with my car and me. We are all inseparable. If my car does something stupid like speeding and my radar detector takes the fall, I go with the both of them. We are the three amigos!
|
I love my radar detector (V1). I've been pulled over 4x in the last 2 years. Every time the convo goes like this:
we greet each other politely know why i pulled you over? 'yeah sorry sir i was getting on it back there' thank you sir i appreciate the honesty. yeah how fast were you going? 'honestly officer idk, couldn't give you an exact number' well i wasn't running radar so i'm gonna give you a warning. 'sorry officer i'll watch my speed' |
Haha I been pulled in my brz 5 times... That's a lot of the reason I drive my hooptie Honda daily mostly now. Plus it got snow tires. Not been pulled in like 5 years even though I drive them both the same.
Only once it was profiling though. Guy was on opposite side of road and flipped a bitch when I pass. I looked at speed. 33, was a 30 zone. He proceeds to say I was "going kinda fast". He didn't say what speed so I'm guessing he didn't clock me. Then he asks me if I've ever been arrested before. After that he says " there is a warrant for someone with your last name" I have a common Hispanic last name and live in an area with a significant Hispanic demographic. But I was passing along the border of the wealthy neighbourhood next to us. To this day I think it was a baseless stop. And I considered taking his badge number and filing a complaint. But I just let it slide maybe I shouldn't have. I still drive around that town even though it takes me longer. |
I believe in the cops profile certain cars. I get strange WTF looks from cops when I drive pass/along side them. Had one pull up behind me this on my drive home from work. Cop was blocking part of the right lane so everyone in front of me was going around him. Of course when I went around him, he looked at me then proceeded to get behind me. I was waiting for him to turn his lights on. He finally got along side of me and gave me the stupid WTF look. Like he was trying to intimidate me.:mad0260:

profiled as a piggy bank in a shiny new(er) car, one that betrays your extra cash with it's appearance of being impractical for hauling groceries and more useful in having fun. So you are more likely than some Buick driver to be able to fund their paycheck for another month.
