Afternmarket HU Phase and Time Alignment problems
 

Hello,

I'm looking at installing an aftermarket headunit and am wondering if others who have done so are running into phase and alignment problems after doing so.

I often have this problem when installing headunits where the factory unit has delay settings built into the unit. It is clear to me that my stock unit has some delay settings built in, as the ability to select which scion car the unit is in affects the sound substantially.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

My overall SQ between the avh-5600bhs, and avh-4100NEX (featuring time alignment) is significantly better when using the autotune with the pioneer mic.
didn't use the autotune with the avh-5600BHS, but do with the avh-4100NEX.

Thanks for the feedback. Without the auto-tune, was it still listenable? I know that's an awfully vague question, but in some cars from my past, the phasing was so far off without time alignment it sounded horrible and messed with my senses so much it practically gave me vertigo.

I have alpine ilx-007. The carplay headunit. It sits flush and it is extremely fast. Improves audio quality too. Haven't experienced anything odd.

Very much so listenable without it, with my speaker configuration.. Your milage may vary.

I would say it depends. If your used to a time aligned system, listening to one without is horrible. That said, most people don't even realize when something is time aligned because of lack of experience.

Probably depends on your ears. Lots of people here have replaced their head units with after market ones and I'm betting 90% of them don't have time alignment, or even know what that is. 100% of them will say it sounds better. :-)

I'm in that 90% crowd :)

for those with time alignment, what values are you using for the speaker locations?

Well, I installed the headunit, and I'm pretty unhappy with the imaging. Dangit. I guess it's back down the car audio rabbit hole. Again.

Just a heads up for those looking for others time alignment values, time alignment is affected by more than just speaker location. It can also be heavily affected by crossover frequency and slope, group delay, and reflections, just to name the basics. So there isn't one setting that will work for every set up in the same car.

So I am using
audiopipe crx-303
with these speakers for the front:
Infinity Reference X REF-6502ix (door)
Infinity Reference X REF-3002cfx (dash)
Infinity Reference X REF-075tx (dash)

I also have
Infinity Reference X REF-4002cfx (rear)
crossed over at 800hz

I used the time alignment built into the head unit and it sounds similar to how it sounded with the 13HU on FRS mode, I think. (it's difficult to objectively compare without having two systems next to each other)

Ok, because your using passives, you can only time align each set of speakers. And since your rears are crossed at 800hz, it makes sense to use that frequency to time align them. I'll look for the info I have about time alignment by ear and post tomorrow afternoon.
