Transmission Oil Leak?
Noticed oil leak on the top & driver side of the transmission. Any thought of what this issue could be.
I checked ground and no oil, I'm assuming the bottom plate cover caught it, if anything. I don't smell anything burning/oil smell when driving. The only thing I noticed is, after driving awhile (1 hour or so), I notice the gear shifter area/center console becomes quite warm. I assume that's normal nature of heat coming from transmission. http://i.imgur.com/KM78c0Zh.jpg |

(I can't tell from the picture) Usually, transmissions don't leak out of the top. Maybe something else is leaking on it .. ?? humfrz |

My friend asked if I didn't tighten the fill hole of the tranny, but I haven't done a single tranny oil change, so that makes it a bit puzzling. There isn't anything on top of the tranny. Unless I am wrong? Thanks |
hmmm....... you might check those heater hoses, where they go into the firewall, for leaks. A leak from them could be following the firewall down and dripping onto the top of the transmission.. ??
I suggest you reach back and get a sample of the dark stuff and see if it feels and smells like oil. Maybe clean off the top of the transmission with something like brake cleaner and see if the "stain" returns. OR, wait until someone who knows what they are talking about, to come along and chime in ...... humfrz |
Can you take a couple more photos from different angles?

I would have to agree with ultramoon. Need better angles. I don't see red fluid.

I stuck my hand in and it's definitely oil. Just don't know where it's coming out. There's this black rod on the top, I notice it's got oil around it, but no idea what it does. |
Hmm I have noticed the same thing going on with my FRS automatic as well did you find the solution??

That is the transmission pressure breather (relief) hose... It's "normal" for some oil residue (oil condensation) to build up around that area... However... if you are noticing alot... enough to cause; say, a drip, that's not normal.
This is only for the AT FR-S/BRZ. |

I saw the same thing last week when I did my Trans Fluid change. Noticed it first on the drivers side, toward the rear and followed it up to what appeared to be a breather. Pic is from the top looking down. Like @DaJo says, probably normal.

Mine has the same issue. Have you got it looked at since this was posted? I have almost 30k miles on my 2013 frs auto and the whole top of the transmission seems to resemble your "leak". Most of the grime was built up around the back of that hose that DaJo mentioned. Its just dark, gritty grime. I was noticing a faint buring smell on WOT and a few regular drives that caused me to pop the hood and look around. Everything else looks bone dry. I plan on dropping the bottem cover and seeing if there is any fluid down there, but from what I have seen it looks dry. The top of the transmission is the only part that looks grimey. Could this residue be causing the burning smell?

Pretty sure DaJo nailed it...
