Shitty MPG

I have a 2015 MT frs
All I've really done with it is Spec D exhaust, K&N filter, coils, tailights.

I noticed my AVG MPG is 23.3..

I live in Vegas, gets hotter than hell here.
My car is garage parked everyday, and I never go over 4k RPM, unless If i'm pulling in the highway or so.

I'm just wondering if its normal to have this kind of MPG... @___@

Noticed it more after I changed my exhausts.. and no I don't rev more cause of the sound. I drive the same with stocks.

Please let me knowwww T^T

If driving exactly the same as before the changes you should not see any drop from a simple exhaust swap.
I have been through Vegas many times and with the stop and go traffic that seems to exist everywhere I am not surprised that your mileage is so low. Especially in the summer heat.
You may want to get it checked out though if you have seen a big difference.

Yeah.. When I first got it around February, The MPG on it was 29 - 31 easily.
And now its dropped so much from that. I know its hot and traffic stops a lot, but it really shouldnt be this low. mmm.... idk what could be the reason for this happening.

To have 23 is not uncommon for people that drive in stop and go a lot but does not explain the drop if you used to get much better in the same driving conditions.

I wish i got 23.3 mpg. i've been hovering around 18-21mpg for the last two and a half years. my latest average is 18.1 mpg.
but, i'm usually cruising at 3-4k rpm and typically go to 5/6k throughout the day.

strat61caster 09-10-2015 12:02 PM

My recent average is around 22-23, before that I easily got 29-32, even a tank of 35mpg

It's entirely dependent on the drive cycle and the driver, I went from a 25 mile freeway commute in traffic with the occasional 200+ mile weekend of open freeways and cruise control to a 5 mile commute on surface streets with traffic lights and much fewer open freeway weekend trips. Also, my right foot has gotten a lot heavier as I have gotten more comfortable with the car.

Stop and go traffic in heat, that's your problem.

I drive on the highway everyday for about 40 to 50 miles roundtrip. With some city driving and even some trips out to San Fransisco as well. I average a full tank of gas to be 30mpg. If I drive mostly freeways (like when I go to Sacramento or Lake tahoe/reno) I get 35-38mpg.

chezzy79 09-10-2015 02:23 PM

If I'm driving in a typical commute traffic, the mileage is about 20-21mpg. On highway though, it's about 35mpg cruising at 70-75mph. Does anybody else feel that cruise control is detrimental to gas mileage?

RandomDeception 09-10-2015 02:41 PM

With my heavy city driving with lots of stops, I get 11.2L/100km, which is almost exactly 21 MPG.

Do you use 6th gear for more than just highway?

I don't remember, do you guys have 93 octane there? If it's 91 only in crazy heat, it's probably pulling a crapload of timing. Also, I see you're running a K&N filter, might need to clean the MAF as K&N's are known to cause issues with them (oil from filter and they don't filter as well so dirt gets through).

pantdino 09-10-2015 04:45 PM

For my mixed traffic and highway driving I was getting 28.x MPG in AT "usual" mode.

the last tankful I was in Sport most of the time and got 26.x-- not enough data to be sure yet but Sport mode does use more fuel, even if you upshift when the extra revs are not needed.

In OP's case, if the A/C is running full blast almost all the time that will take a toll on the mileage too.

It's situational, on a level road with minimal elevation changes where I can maintain a constant speed for a long time, cruise control will out mpg me all day long. Up a hill, I'm downshifting to get up there without lugging so I can coast down, maybe even downshifting a gear or two on the descent to not pick up too much speed and avoid using my brakes (which take the gas you just used to gain momentum and turns it into useless heat).

Yup California Arizona and Nevada all run 91.

Excellent point, once my engine is warm I will drop to fifth gear at 35 mph, 6th at 45 mph if traffic is convenient, second nature to someone used to larger displacement vehicles but counter-intuitive to those who have spent their time around higher revving Japanese and Euro cars especially given that the FA20 does not like pulling from below 2k rpm.

It's easy to forget that it's happy to cruise down around 1.5k-2k rpm, but don't expect to put your foot down and have anything except ugly noises happen.

That sound about right for only city stop & go driving. :bonk:

IF you do long drives to cali or other state then u will see u can average 35ish on highway only driving.
