BRZ Radio Firmware Update

Came home from the gym today and then got in my car again 20 minutes later and apparently the radio firmware updated. When I turned it on the radio it made me go through an initial set up (Langauge, terms of use, etc...)

I've been playing around with it for a few minutes and notice some changes.

- Nav is more responsive. The lag from the touchscreen is reduced, especially when zooming in and out in the map.
- Nav traffic button? Displays all traffic info on your route. Might've been here before but I don't use the Nav enough to remember.
- iPod button on radio changed to "USB"

There's probably more things that were tweaked, but these are the ones I've noticed so far.

Wait. Is this only for 2015 models? Would love to get an update on my 2013 unit. haha

Are you sure about that? It sounds to me the head unit did a factory reset, and you saw all the initial setup screens on startup. This happens to me and a few others occasionally and randomly. Sometimes a bad mp3 on the USB can cause a HU reset as well. I think the fast performance you are seeing is in your head, or a result of clearing out all the settings.

It's hard to believe the navigation can download the new firmware without any internet besides radio signals. I think your head unit crashed and had hard reset

It's technically feasible. HD Radio is digital so it is really data. If I recall correctly it can be have up to 300 kbit/s bitrate which then gets divided into the multiple channels so it could very well deliver a firmware update in a relatively short time. That said, I don't believe the spec allows for pure data transmission over FM airwaves.

I did a quick search and I couldn't find any information on using FM or AM to carry firmware updates to radios, or any other type of data delivery for that matter.

Pioneer does have firmware updates on their website for various radios, but unfortunately not OEM ones from what I could tell.

EDIT: Did a little more searching and did find on the FCC website that data itself is not prohibited, and (doh) is of course how traffic reports and such are delivered.

You could program your digital radio receiver to display weather updates, traffic reports and other news.

Of course, Pioneer would have to get a radio station to agree to distribute the data but that isn't unheard of. There have been times in the past when data was embedded in radio and TV broadcasts for other purposes.

But, it is more likely as said above the radio did a factory reset for some odd reason.

The head unit in my '14 was updated from the subaru website via the flash drive. Had to put it in my computer and copy the update file.
here's one for MY 12 and 13.

whats the cost for that?

ryoma 09-14-2015 08:54 PM

is there a need to update firmware on a 2015? is there a website to go to for firmware updates? I'm assuming you just load new firmware on the SD card and flash it instead of taking it to the dealership.

You need this to update: https://subaru-na.naviextras.com/shop/portal/downloads

No charge to install updates to head unit. I think the map updates are $150 bucks. I just did the unit updates.

Anybody having success using this app/website? I'm getting a bunch of generic permission denied messages and it can't seem to connect to my SD card reader.

Perhaps we can compile a list of software versions. I'll start:

Model Year and Trim: 2015 Limited
Head Unit Model: FA643US
Navigation Version: 12:41/14.02 9.2.7.368441
Audio Version: 12,08,2014 Ver.68.3004

just a heads up that my 2015 HU had an available update from the toolbox. it was only a 3.5MB update though and didn't really specify what it was aside from saying it fixed some issues with the navigation. however, I did notice that the maps loaded on mine were from 2013...

you also do need to create an account on the toolbox application otherwise it won't give you updates for your HU
