tire size advice needed

totally newbie question:

I'm thinking of changing my rims to size 18 x 8 mainly for looks. I'm choosing a conservative upgrade because I don't want to change my springs, coil overs and lowering my car is not an option because roads in my area have lots of potholes and speed ramps.

1st question is it it going to be a big difference in terms of looks from the stock 17 x 7?

what size of wheels would you think would be better and why 225/40 or 225/45?

thanks guys!

225/45/18 tires are too big for the car. and then plus stock suspension, the car will look raised up like a rally car.

225/40/18 will be better for overall size, but your wheel gap will look even bigger than stock if you stay with stock suspension.

If you lower your car 1" with springs your car will look just as good with 17 as with 18" wheels. If you get wheels I recommend 35 offset as it is the most flush with the fenders. I would stick with 17" as you'll get slightly better performance out of them. I currently run 17x8.25" with 245-40r17 so feel free to check out my build thread. I originally put on 18x8 but the 17s perform a little better and feel better when driving even though the 18s were a couple pounds lighter than my current 17s.

I think he means 225/45 will be too big. If so, I agree.

If you care more about looks than all out performance, go for the 18's. They look great. But as most will declare, you're better off with 17's for acceleration, handling, etc. Still, those of us who stick with 17's usually wish they looked like the 18's :-)

wait, you don't wish they were 14's for the amazing light weight and lower cost? Just think about how much lighter and less expensive 14" Volk Ce28's are than 17's.

If you're not doing any power mods, I would go 8.5 at most. You'll definitely get more grip on turns, but your car will run noticeably heavier/more sluggish compared to stock due to bigger wheels, especially if they're not anything light like RPF1s.
Just don't make the mistake of getting any cheap chrome 18 inch rims from your local tire shop.
