DIY: STI Replica Side Skirts by Bason R
since front lip installation is simple i am not going to post it but some people have difficulty understanding on installation of STI side skirts.
I bought both Front Lip & side skirts from BasonR in Ebay. do not ask me for link. just search seller's name of BasonR or type "STI Front lip" and you can find it very easy. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pswtipdnha.jpg Requirement Tool: 1. 10mm socket & Wrench 2. Rivet Gun (or you can supply bolts and nuts) 3. screw driver http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psj7pa259s.jpg 1. lay down all necessary hardware and refresh your mind where bolt and nuts and go as well as double side tape. lol http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psobmk93cb.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psu5g2awxs.jpg 2. use supplied double side 3M tape to apply on side skirts where it's going to meet side of body on car. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psv7okvbgf.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pspsjhmlbx.jpg 3. take out Rivet gun and load a bullet! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ps3pvrdso5.jpg 4. use Rivet gun and install it as picture above http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psno6ybqde.jpg back of rivet looks like this. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psacwljzcv.jpg Left one is used, right one is before. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psa6hyxyt4.jpg 5. install bracket with bolt and nuts http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psaexzedqu.jpg 6. see your side of car and think about how side skirts are going to be installed. at each end of front and back of side, you can find one each clip on bottom. you'll be re-using these clips to bracket from side skirts http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ps6uz1u3nz.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psrslsjex0.jpg 7. since i did not have any 2nd person to hold side skirts, i used container to hold at back. try test fitting and squeeze on back to fit. use side skirts bracket installed to fit under the car. (forgot to take picture but you'll understand about clip and bracket once you see under the car) my car is stock height and didnt have to lift the car. but if you're super lowered, you might put on jack stands that make your life easier after installing clips and screws, start peel off double side tape and apply to body. do not push up side skirts and apply to paint!! because your side skirts will sag eventually due to its weight! just pushe side of skirts to make a contact to body and double side will stick! Note: This is replica!! location of double side tape i applied on side skirts did not make good contact with body of car, so i re-applied. 8. It's Done! do the same on other side. below is result of Side skirts install! Enjoy! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psytpwnir7.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pst9mxfhoq.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pswkkqfsac.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psciozkcgd.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pslbcno0vj.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psvwnoyqym.jpg After install, there is little gap because of double side tape is little bit pulled off from body. I expected this but very unnoticeable unless you go and try to find it. For price of this replica, this is very good fitment. if you cannot deal with little gap, then buy original one for $600 -$800 I probably gonna take off again and re-apply thicker double side tape so it will hold to body well. but cost of double side tape and edgeguard tape will cost me about $30-$40!!! if you have any question or comment, let me know! http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...psumt8patz.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ps0bhuekkw.jpg After 2 days, i see little gap as expected It's not really noticeable so i am just going to leave like this for while i might have to use thicker/double the layer of tape later |
wrap the hood glossy black + get the rear side lip (w/e its called)

Nope. maybe plastic dip it later.. |
I have some of their stuff as well and like it, thanks for the writeup!
Couldn't help but notice it makes the side of the car seem higher up and almost like its lifted. just a strange optical illusion with the black/white. |

only fenderliner at front but if you do doubleside tape well, you dont have to. use double layer of tape because tape does not touch body of car very well. i re installed on driver side with triple tape and now tape on side is lifted! little annoying but just use double side tape making sure they stick well. |
You all better pay attention to this thread. I also installed my Bayson R and my experience was good except that the double sided tape, doesn't stick to the body, so you will get an ugly gap between skirts and body. It's not the tape that is bad, it's the goes about 1/4 inch below the edge of the skirt, and the edge is not flat, therefore the tape is kind of in the inside and doesn't reach the body when pushed. I had to take it all out again, and of course, once tape has been put in place, you kind of have to get rid of it. My solution, i bought 3 of these [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JOVUO0"]Amazon.com: 3M 03614 Scotch-Mount 1/2" x 15' Molding Tape: Automotive[/ame] and put triple tape. The thing is that this tape is thinner than the original one (the one that kits come with is ticker). If I hadn't removed the original tape, I would only need one of the 3m tapes from link. That would be enough for both.

Also, 3M Double tape first, then weather tape 2nd is a tip we realized when we installed it. |
i re-installed driver side with triple tape. hope it doesnt come off
|
So, after replacing oneside with wider/thicker 3M tape.
You also need a heat gun or even a blow dryer. My repaired side skirt is a little better a little saggy. The non-repaired side with the tape that came with the skirt finally sagged too. Make sure after applying the newer/thicker 3M, hold it in place or go over it with LIGHT pressure, then hit with a blow dryer, then more pressure. I'll see how it is after 2-3 more days. |
