Something eating away at paint
Over the last year that I've had my BRZ I've noticed that something has been eating away at the paint slowly and in different spots. The car is washed and detailed every few weeks. It is also washed as soon as I notice bird poop or tree sap, etc. This is not a case of neglect.
It has these "chips" in the trunk, roof, and end of the hood. They are not from the road because the same ones are on the trunk too! The Subaru dealership said it is not covered under warranty. My paint guy(who runs a supercar body shop) said he has never seen anything eat away at the paint like that before. He said it reminded him of brake fluid and asked if my car was recently under a lift where brake fluid could have spilled onto it... Here are the best pictures I have of the paint being eaten away: http://i.imgur.com/vPFyB8r.jpg http://i.imgur.com/37A7qTb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/kKakQi5.jpg http://i.imgur.com/BRNXepT.jpg http://i.imgur.com/LGTByIF.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AGtxbMu.jpg Keep in mind that I don't think it is the trees(or sap) because my other cars don't have this issue and they go months without being washed and never detailed. On the other hand, I baby the BRZ and wash it by hand, wax it, and detail it every few weeks.

It kinda looks like a paint defect. I remember seeing another thread in where an FR-S owner was experiencing the paint lifting in certain spots.

i am going to get killed by saying this, but maybe you wash the car too much.:eyebulge:
Seriously though, all paint now sucks. Can't really believe the paint is not under a warranty. |
Could be anything. I would stop parking under trees.

I have the same, noticed it about a year or two ago, hasn't gotten any worse and I've just been in denial. I don't recall any tree sap or bird droppings etc. in that area just noticed the paint was missing one day.
:iono: Edit: Definitely don't wash it too much, average about once a month although I am not great at taking care of the paint, I've done some damage that needs reconditioning but it should not result in total paint removal like this. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/um...o=w944-h534-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ba...I=w944-h534-no I'm just thinking about what color to paint it or wrap it when the paint gets so bad it's embarrassing. |
I'm in the process of complaining about mine due to similar spots - the service advisor acted like it may be covered and asked me to go to their body shop for a quote, which I am doing Friday morning.

i have a bunch of these little marks on my roof. (13 BRZ DMG) My friends DMG wrx have the same issues. I didnt have any issues like this with my old whiteout frs. It seem like alot DMG are having this issue. Prolly a bad clear/paint?

I've had rock chips that looked like that on an old Volkswagen.
|
I have had subarus in the past come in with paint chips all over the car from stones, all over the roof even that's typical Subaru stuff.
|
maybe you should contact subaru north america customer service and complain. I think it is either rock chips or air bubble in the paint.
|
I also posted this on Reddit's /r/ft86 and a couple people over there said they are having this issue too. I just can't figure out what it is because none of the other cars around here have it. I don't want to get it repainted because if it's not a defect and something environmental, it might come back.
Looks like the consensus is continue to complain to Subaru North America? |
we should start a class lawsuit...

I have this happening on my hood.

It's possible my BRZ also has defects in the paint, but it's SWP so I don't notice the white under the paint. I'd say try to find some clear protector, like a BRA, for the roof. I park under palm trees and during the fall squirrels drop seeds like their conducting their own little bomb raid.
Edit: Maybe it's only a defect on the black paint? My friend has a 2014 WRB BRZ, takes it to a typical (A.K.A. horrible) car wash station every 2 weeks or so and hasn't seen a paint defect yet. |
