Video and Data overlays, best way?

I'm thinking of going with the AiM Solo DL for Data Acquisition.

What's the best camera/software setup to make data overlays as painless as possible?

As painless as possible? AIM Smarty cam. It's not cheap, but its a fully integrated solution.

We can get you both.

either iphone harrys lap timer, which is fantastic for the cost
if you go Aim Solo DL then smartycam is in your future.

For track or autocross?

I use Solo Storm for autocross and it is pretty nice. I use a bluetooth GPS and my GoPro via wifi, all which is controlled by the app for start/stop of video and data acquisition. Simple to overlay the data on top of video too.

It is specifically meant for solo/pro-solo though. I supposed you could use it for track but might not be optimal.

As has been mentioned a Solo DL with smarty cam is a painless solution. I use a solo dl with a gopro and then use racerender 3 to sync and overlay data afterwards, take a bit of time but I enjoy playing around with it after the track day...

Yow, that may have to wait then. I'll be sending you a PM today regarding another parts order though. :D

Track. Never done auto-X (though I want to try it), with how cheap our local track is, the $$$-to-run time ratio of Auto-X isn't appealing.

Especially adding in I'm sitting on asphalt all day and have to work a session, vs sitting underneath the trees/raceport waiting for my next session.

Nice, I'll watch the video when I get home (blocked at work).

Smarty Cam is probably the best/easiest option, but I went with something cheaper.

I'm using an AIM Solo DL for data logging and just your basic go pro for video. I then use software called RaceRender to do the data overlay (http://racerender.com/RR3/Features.html). It takes a couple minutes of work to get everything synced up but its not hard.

Here's how what it looks like for my videos:

Sound isn't great in this one, need to switch to the non-waterproof back plate.

Yes, the $ to run time ratio is not great, but you will not get anywhere near the type of precision driving or car control experience on an open lapping day/HPDE. It is quite addicting, I highly recommend, especially with a twin! (and I do a lot of track days too but love autox)

Being a volunteer/supporter is kind of the idea behind a car club event (to keep cost down). There are cushy jobs too, you just need to know how to get them.

I use Aim Solo DL + GoPro. It may not be as seamless as SmartyCam but its not that difficult. Once you create your own template it takes only a couple of minutes to sync the data and video in RaceRender3.

here is my setup:

if you only wanted information like G-meter and speed, you could use the Garmin Virb XE. it tracks GPS information along with recording the video and is automatically synced. then in the free virb software you can choose from some overlays. but you would lack things like rpm and throttle and brake information.

How do you have your Solo mounted? more and more tracks over here are saying no to suction mounts.

I use suction cup mount to the rear window. Here I've seen some organizations that require safety straps for suction cup mounts but only when mounted on the exterior.

Yeah - we used to be able to mount them with a 'safety tether' but even this is becoming banned. It looks in the video that you have it mounted to the dash somehow? so thought you had came up with a nice 'solid' mount.

Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you are talking about the gopro. The solo is mounted on a proclip mount
