Anyone Else Considering the FT-86 Convertible?
With the FT-86 II concept teaser pictures out, has anyone else thought about the convertible version that might come out a year later? I know there is little space in the trunk, but if Toyota is considering it then it might change the concept's bumper design a bit to accommodate the needed extra space. Also, do you think there would be any chance that it might be a hardtop convertible? I know it would add extra weight, but I think it would look cooler than a soft top.

I don't care too much about a convertible version...but if profit is any concern they may take a few more development dollars to expand the range.
I'd imagine a lot of money went into the ft-86 and it'd be wasteful for them not to expand. I hear the next generation Lexus IS will ride on the FT-86 platform. Porsche wants to do the same with the Panamera and make a coupe version and whatnot. As for a folding hardtop...I don't think so, but they will annoy Mazda with their hardtop MX-5. |
Not interested. My Supra's a targa and I would prefer if it were a hard-top. I don't even want a sunroof.

It would probably be a good idea for Toyota to look into it. But I wouldn't buy one since it would likely compromise the structural integrity/performance/weight of the car. You would think I'd like the idea since I live in southern California with our near-perfect weather year-round, but I don't like skin cancer.

Making a coupe in to a convertible is a bad idea for rigidity.. Rx8 and mx5 are made so that the roof plays no part in the rigidity (rx8 has no b pillars so the roof is useless). They both utilize a double tub design chassis with a very high backbone and are fairly stiff.

I absolutely love that hatchback, but Ichi, can you make the back just a little bit lower?
For the drop top, the car has no back space at all, it's a punishment for tall people. |
The leading edge of the doors act as a virtual b pillar in case of side impact, but provide absolutely nothing to the torsional rigidity of the car since it is only pinned to the floor an roof with latches and hinges (4point and 3 pins per door)
Sorry i didn't mean it to sound like the rx8 is a convertible, I wasn't even aware that there was one(cheers dark), but what I meant was the roof on the 8 doesn't play any part (or I should say I very minor one) in providing any sort of torsional rigidity (resistance to twisting under cornering) to the car and therefore it doesn't matter if it was a convertible or not since the bottom part of the chassis provides all the resistance needed. The same design is used in a 5 (which is a convertible) But if you take a normal coupe, that was designed to be a coupe, and make it a convertible it will suffer dramatically, unless heaps more strengthening (weight) is added. Sorry to blab about this, but I found it interesting, I just got a rx8 nearly 2months ago and have been learning everything I can bout it and the rensis Should have made it more clear, sorry, I was in a hurry when I posted that |
