In Japanese, the word most commonly used these days when talking about sex and sexual things is
ecchi(エッチ or エッチな). It’s pronounced
ay-chi or
eh-chi, but there is a slight silent pause between the
ay/eh and the
chi. In and of itself, apart from it being used to describe sexual things, it’s not really a word, but actually the spelled out Japanese pronunciation of the English/Roman letter ‘H’. Why ‘H’? Because it’s the first letter of the Romanized spelling of the word
hentai, which we all know and love and brings us full circle back to sexual things and why the Japanese use
ecchi to describe them.
Now, one thing to note is that
hentai isn’t necessarily always used to describe sexual perversion, but can also mean anything that is kinda twisted or warped or someone who is warped as well, for example someone who gets off on killing or harming people or animals, like a serial killer. Most common of course is sexual perversion, but it’s not an exclusive meaning.
Likewise, despite
ecchi’s origin in the word
hentai, it doesn’t typically mean sexually perverted or expicit content. It’s usually literally a substitute for the word ‘sex’ or ‘sexual’, so for example, if you were to ask your significant other if they wanted to have sex, the Japanese phrase translates more or less to ‘Wanna do
ecchi tonight?’ So in and of itself, it’s not really used to describe perverted things or porn, so much as just sex in general. My wife and I are in our 50’s and when we talk about such things,
ecchi is the word we use, so it’s really commonplace with most people in general.
In any case, the long and short of it is that
ecchi derives from
hentai and means sexual things, but not necessarily sexually perverted or explicit things like porn. And the reason you see English speaking people use the letter ‘H’ when talking about Japanese sexual content like an H-game is because technically it’s the shortened Romanized form of the word
ecchi which is the Romanized Japanese pronunciation of the letter ‘H’, which is the Romanized first letter of the word
hentai. Whew, got all that?! It’s a workout isn’t it?
FWIW, my wife is Japanese and I’ve got a degree in the language and in Japanese culture and society in general, so this kind of stuff is fun to explain and share for me. Been speaking it every day for coming up on almost 25 years now.
