I believe H stand for hentai which, for the purposes of the English speaking world means anime porn or pervert.

In Japanese, the word most commonly used these days when talking about sex and sexual things is ecchi(エッチ or エッチな). It’s pronounced ay-chi or eh-chi, but there is a slight silent pause between the ay/eh and the chi. In and of itself, apart from it being used to describe sexual things, it’s not really a word, but actually the spelled out Japanese pronunciation of the English/Roman letter ‘H’. Why ‘H’? Because it’s the first letter of the Romanized spelling of the word hentai, which we all know and love and brings us full circle back to sexual things and why the Japanese use ecchi to describe them.

Now, one thing to note is that hentai isn’t necessarily always used to describe sexual perversion, but can also mean anything that is kinda twisted or warped or someone who is warped as well, for example someone who gets off on killing or harming people or animals, like a serial killer. Most common of course is sexual perversion, but it’s not an exclusive meaning.

Likewise, despite ecchi’s origin in the word hentai, it doesn’t typically mean sexually perverted or expicit content. It’s usually literally a substitute for the word ‘sex’ or ‘sexual’, so for example, if you were to ask your significant other if they wanted to have sex, the Japanese phrase translates more or less to ‘Wanna do ecchi tonight?’ So in and of itself, it’s not really used to describe perverted things or porn, so much as just sex in general. My wife and I are in our 50’s and when we talk about such things, ecchi is the word we use, so it’s really commonplace with most people in general.

In any case, the long and short of it is that ecchi derives from hentai and means sexual things, but not necessarily sexually perverted or explicit things like porn. And the reason you see English speaking people use the letter ‘H’ when talking about Japanese sexual content like an H-game is because technically it’s the shortened Romanized form of the word ecchi which is the Romanized Japanese pronunciation of the letter ‘H’, which is the Romanized first letter of the word hentai. Whew, got all that?! It’s a workout isn’t it?

FWIW, my wife is Japanese and I’ve got a degree in the language and in Japanese culture and society in general, so this kind of stuff is fun to explain and share for me. Been speaking it every day for coming up on almost 25 years now.

I watched the live action Cowboy Bebop on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it. Same feel as the anime, bit I found it easier to follow the (tweaked) plot. Visually it's pretty damn good, and the acting was superb.

Too bad they cancelled the second season. There's apparently a petition to revive it, but I doubt it will do anything. IMO, it's one of those wasted moments of brilliance, kinda like Firefly.

I remember when both of those first broadcast in the US. Can't believe they are still going lol.

Yes I did watch both But there's a point where things go on just a bit too long.

A lot of people are telling me to watch Naruto, but with how many episodes they have out, and the fact that like half of them are just filler episodes turns me off from even giving it a chance.

One Piece just never looked interesting to me.

This thread makes me think of a story about a trip to Okinawa. My brother and I don't speak the language and one of my cousins who knows a tiny, tiny bit of english was asking if we liked "whiskey." My brother and I are quite a bit older than our cousins overseas, but of course we liked whiskey. Apparently there was a large misunderstanding on what he was saying, my brother left with him since I was doing something else, and he ended up taking my brother to a comic book store.

Unfotable's masterful blending of 3d assets, animation lovely key art displayed in the climax of the the latest Kimetsu no Yaiba episode, 'Never Give Up,' might be one of the best fight scenes I've seen since the main switch to cgi anime.

I barely ever watch anime with an English dub, because I feel there is a disconnect, like there is no soul, no passion. Which blows my mind because English track cartoons have great voice actors that were perfect for their characters. But I stumbled across one of favorite anime of all time; Ghost Stories (Gakkō no Kaidan).

Now, I'm not denying that is simply hilarious, but is hilarious on how bad it was in term of dub.

I grew up watching anime with a Spanish dub and I've come to appreciate it even more once I got to the U.S and tried to watch the English ones. Then I discovered that nothing beats Japanese dialog, but with English sub.

I do go back from time to time and watch Gundam Wing, Inuyasha, DBZ, Zenki, Saint Seiya, SCC, Runouni Kenshin, etc with Spanish dubs because I feel they match the passion of Japanese voice actors, and is simply fond memories of staying up late or coming home after middle school.
