AT : Question about manual shifting

Hi guys,

I got my 2015 Subaru BRZ AT about a month ago, and put a little over 3700 miles on it already. When I'm driving locally, I've learned that keeping my revs lower and gears higher helps me get better mileage, and I sometimes switch it into the manual mode, using paddle shifters. I'm wondering if switching into the manual mode mid-drive will affect my transmission negatively in any way? Sorry if it's a dumb question, still a car newbie here!

Shouldn't have an impact, I do this all the time. All switching to manual mode does is move the decision point from the computer to the driver. It's basically a software thing.

I have tracked my mileage over about 66K miles (see my builder's log for the history), and I don't see an appreciable difference between modes. If anything the AT mode is going to be more fuel efficient because it is pretty well programmed for that unless you put it in sport mode, or really kick down on the accelerator.

Don't be like me: switch it to manual and forget to shift until the engine screams "shift, you dumbass!"

That tends to bring down the gas mileage...

Nope, just enjoy it and carry on. :burnrubber:

Soulreapersteve that would be me too. I'm too concerned about forgetting to shift up that I've not tried manual yet on my 2015 AT

It's pretty hard to forget the shift up, the engine will let you know. Trust me, you will definitely enjoy it when you start using it.

My biggest problem was 1) remembering to keep my foot in it when I shifted, I wanted to try and rev-match, and 2) trying to push in the "clutch" when shifting. My left foot just kept stomping the dead-pedal.

Haha. Yeah! My big problem with a manual BRZ is that learning on a manual in the UK I always reach to the left for the gearstick. That's why I went for the auto but I am going to try the paddles. Just on a quiet road the first time though!

Thanks all for the replies! @Dadhawk I probably have a bit of a heavier feet when just driving in auto - the manual driving limits me from accelerating too hard most of the time

I always use the paddles. Don't care much for using the stick just moving it up or down.

Nope, just do it.

Yeah, don't worry about all that. Manual mode is pretty fun!

I have never driven a manual transmission before and I find myself wanting to push a clutch pedal lol.... Gets kinda awkward when I have a passenger.

When I first started driving my AT, I would slam the brake and imaginary clutch in emergency brake situations lol
