Yes, a Torsen differential uses gears inside to transfer torque. It's a proven 20+ year old design. There aren't clutches inside causing the two wheels to lock up. Nor is there a viscous coupling to adjust transfer between wheels based on a speed difference.

these are still dumb mechanical differentials. The are subject to whatever compromises were made in the mechical design of the gears. A computer controlled torque vectoring differential like you find on higher end drivetrains (Evo X for example, or BMW M cars) are not subject to a fixed bias ratio curve.

Well yeah I guess they' "dumb" in that they have no thinking at all to do. Instead they just work with virtually no reaction time at all. Which is great. The torsion LSD is the best type for road cars. I definitely wouldn't prefer a "thinking" electronic LSD since it's against the ENTIRE POINT OF THE CAR.

Now, there are some parts of the car that should remain purely mechanical, I agree with you. Saying a Torsen LSD is the BEST for road cars; however, is ignorant. I'd love me some torque vectoring as found on the Evolution!

Torque vectoring differentials are impressive, but I'm glad I didn't have to pay for one.

Yeah the evo has some awesome computers to make the car go fast in just about any condition. I probably won't miss those much since if I am doing a track day, I'm just going to turn everything off and try to be a better driver. The fancy diffs would be nice on the road but I don't think they'd be worth the price.
