Toyota emblems all over my FR-S Monogram, no Scion. Could this be factory?

Hey everyone,

I'm posting some pictures here to show you.
The steering wheel and the front bumber and trunk both have black Toyota emblems instead of Scion. The only place I can find "Scion" is on the radio.
It's a monogram edition so I know it's somewhat special.
I guess I'm just hoping that it is special enough to have earned these things out of the factory and not that they were put on the vehicle by its previous owner.
Google doesn't come up with any type discussion when I type in stuff like "monogram fr-s toyota emblem."
Really hoping that someone can confirm this either way.

Thank you very much!

Clipdat 08-10-2015 04:14 AM

Previous owner.

Packofcrows 08-10-2015 04:23 AM

Yeah. its a used car.

funwheeldrive 08-10-2015 04:28 AM

lol no.

Try looking under that steering wheel badge

SquadRogue 08-10-2015 04:31 AM

Sick leds does the monogram have a supercharger?

DAEMANO 08-10-2015 04:45 AM

Plasti-dipped side vents are definitely not OEM. BTW, they're in need of a touch-up on the edges, they're peeling.

Mark P 08-10-2015 05:02 AM

Thanks.
It is not supercharged.
There's nothing done to it besides the stripping of Scion identification.
That is probably the biggest reason I found it unlikely that someone changed all of these things.

Dude you must be joking, its all plastidip crap and a cheap swap of an emblem on the steering wheel. Hope the seller of the car didnt blow smoke in your face with this "special" of special editions. :bellyroll:

soulreapersteve 08-10-2015 08:24 AM

Yeah, I too hope you didn't get ripped off when you bought the car.

Tcoat 08-10-2015 08:27 AM

From what I have read here I think about 80% of the FRSs out there have been badge swapped.
If you dig through the forum you may even find the previous owner.

Rakshaa 08-10-2015 09:11 AM

No it is not factory as others have mentioned. I have a monogram edition so I know. Although it has several features seen on the GT86 overseas and the BRZ Limited here, it is still badged Scion FR-S inside out.

The previous owner of your car changed the exterior badges to black toyota ones, did a cheap cover of the steering wheel emblem (which I would take off for safety reasons in the event of Airbag deployment - Scion one will be underneath), they swapped wheels centre caps and dipped/wrapped fender 86 badge black.

If you have any monogram questions, I would be happy to help out :) Congrats on the purchase.

Braces 08-10-2015 09:38 AM

Curious what the dealership told you re: the badges.

I think you guys may be reading more into the OP's question then is there. There is no indication in anything he said that the dealer was misleading him in any way. He was just wondering (and maybe hoping a little) if it was different.
I am a bit jealous since I would have loved to buy a Lava Monogram but we didn't get them in Canada.

I wouldn't be surprised if the car had been modified at one time and then switched back to stock before selling.

A hot lava monogram is incredibly rare though, assuming it has a manual transmission.

WhiteFRS69 08-10-2015 12:43 PM

cant tell if there are Toyota Center caps on the rims or not...

Ya it should be fairly easy to guess who had it if we could narrow down the Lava Monograms.

Pretty cheap cosmetic mods so may not have been touched mechanically.

Hey, @jeffsides recognize it?

tobin 08-10-2015 12:50 PM

Is that even a Monogram? I didn't know they came in that color last year.

cdq85 08-10-2015 12:54 PM

yea and the monogram's come with really crappy headlights. i'll trade you straight up for my stock ones. :thanks:

They came in every stock colour in the US. For Canada, only whiteout, firestorm & raven

Right lights and spoiler (those could have been added of course) and they did come in Lava but there were very few of them.

Teseo 08-10-2015 01:12 PM

More info about headlights

If interior looks like this (minus the emblems) then you are good.

Much harder to emulate the monogram interior bits than the exterior, namely the centre dash with switches and push start and the leather/alcantara seats (among other things).

The monogram also has the regular grey brake FRS handle instead of the black/red stitched one.

I know it's not a big deal but it bugs the crap out of me. :bonk:

Was this a private sale or through a dealer? Either way, wondering if you paid extra for the "custom"work. People who dont disclose everything prior to a sale suck.

go_a_way1 08-10-2015 02:58 PM

I thought monograms only came in a special silver color?

you're referring to a 10-Series.

Figo 08-10-2015 03:15 PM

I am pretty sure that the seats are not factory.

I have two factory seats with "red shoulder" and you can trade for them with your seats.

Yes, it's going to be free.

I'm sure they reverted all the modifications beyond those to stock.

The Toyota badge on your steering wheel is an option sold by FT86SpeedFactory. It's held on by double-sided tape.

soulreapersteve 08-10-2015 04:55 PM

If it's not too private, are you willing to share how much you bought this for along with mileage?

Tromatic 08-10-2015 04:59 PM

I'd be wondering what else had been done. Rebadgers, are, uh, not to be trusted with anything.

fitcious 08-10-2015 05:22 PM

how safe are those badges on the steering wheel? let's say, the airbag deploys, will the emblem you put on there pull a Takata? Because I am pretty sure emblems on steering wheels are tested so when airbag deploys, it won't stab you in the throat?

The airbag opens and it rips the flap up if it's going to "stab" anything it'd be the roof hypothetically speaking. Of course no ones test it out so its not 100% confirmed that's what it'd do.

The company I work for has one of the largest active/passive restraint system R&D facilities in the world.
I have watched dozens of crash tests and as cool as they are the one common theme was that add on parts are totally unpredictable. In the case of stuff on the steering wheel logic would tell you that it would fly straight up but in reality if it lets go halfway through the blast it can come straight at your head Just as your head is headed straight for it. Not allowed to take or share pictures but believe me the results can be scary. Just try to pry it up and if it moves at all pull it off. If you can't budge it you are probably OK.

While I have the opportunity to preach:
Never attach anything to the A pillar without deactivating any airbag that may be located there (the twins are ok there isn't one there). That cool boost gauge will become a grenade in a crash

Check any after market seat covers to ensure they are airbag compatible. We do have airbags in our seats and if the charge can't expand the bag it will transfer that force right under the cover to your kidneys and spleen

Do not attach or place anything on the dash or in front of the passenger bag. A tablet or cell phone mounted too far over is now a bullet when the bag hits it

Disconnect the battery before doing any work on the steering wheel or dash where you could possibly short anything out. Airbags can save you in a crash but can take off fingers or cause other serious injuries if accidently set off while not in a driving position.

Don't play with them. Airbags are powerful explosive devices. The you tube videos of people playing practical jokes my look funny but you could easily kill yourself or your buddy.

Above all remember that these cars are designed to protect you in a crash so don't disable the systems because "bags are for whimps" or "I don't want them going off on the track".

OTOH, T, tales of people who get whacked by mods are entertaining.

Monogram Molestation should be a felony.
