4.56 FD Swap Parts and Labor :)

Just got back from getting the final drive swap completed by a local shop in the NW area. Got the ring/pinion and the install kit from weir performance for a little over $400

Found a shop in Portland, OR that had done SEVERAL final drive swaps on the 86 platform, and he's incredibly fair for his rates!
Got the entire labor complete for around $370
$300 for labor
$70 for supplies

It was done in a single day. I just need to change out the fluid in around 1000 miles after the gears have broken in. Absolutely NO whine at all from incorrect backlash. Entire car has more torque, and when this mod is paired with E85. I don't believe there is a better NA setup that you can do!! :bellyroll:

Just wanted to share my experience ;)

incorrect backlash? how much is the correct amount?

I think FD changes are the best way to change the driving experience of this car, be it up or down.

Backlash would make a deccel whine and pinion depth would make and accel whine.. both are very important. i just took out my gear to prep for turbo.. it feels like my gears got so long going 4.1

I installed MFactory gears and I got a slight whine all the time over about 50mph, MFactory said thats completely normal with there gears.

If anyone needs a spare stock diff to do a gear swap on so your car isn't down, I have like 5 sitting here lol

Or find a shop that is able to do the swap in one day ;)

Took @Ultramaroon for a drive out in the twisties outside of portland. He hammered through some of the gears and he loved it ;)

hey spitfire
how much for one shipped to Vancouver Canada?

Ultramaroon 08-08-2015 01:42 AM

It's quite dramatic. First gear is still necessary/usable but second is no longer too tall for tighter switchbacks. Second-third-second transitions are a joy.

The corn juice doesn't hurt either. :D

Well done!

Sigh...sounds like I HAVE TO add this to the to-do list

What's the original ratio? I don't memorize that stuff.

Original ratio is 4.1. Should be about a 10% increase of torque to the wheels, as well as an increase of 10% approx RPMs
80mph is 3800-3900 i believe?

I'll go check brb...

Added a quick 0-85ish video so you can see how much the shorter ratio affects car :)
Also added to first post
