whats with the paint?
 

love this car...bought it in feb of this year. but fuck me i have never had a vehicle chip and scratch like this one? its like everytime I wash it i see more scratches. And I have had alot of vehicles. the vehicle paint sucks bigtime on this car

The more the world governments crack down on VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) the weaker the paint on new cars is going to get. Comparing this paint to cars that are as little as 3 years old is not apples to apples since there was a world wide major reduction of VOCs required back in 2012. Might as well get used to it.

All cars are like this because the EPA mandated manufacturers use water based paint (better for the environment but does nothing for the durability). You're better off getting your paint color corrected, opti coat applied, then put on as protective paint film as you can afford (full hood/front bumper/roof).

Yeah, the paint is bullshit now...(thanks big government...). My old mustang with 200,000 miles on the odometer that got beat on constantly held up much better after years of abuse then my only new car purchase ever... Not pleased with the paint either.

Those are cool except:
Interior is decrepit
Front is too high (good for safety but not for looks)
No power -especially for a V6 (you could push a FR-S uphill faster)
Always clean the stainless along the grain!
Not reliable/cheap to own
Plastic front end gets droopy

Ya overall they are crap but no real paint to worry about.

I did the same thing, I took off the white plastics, double bucket wash, polish, then wax with a Harbor Freight orbital polisher though.. Also it's not the paint that's weak it's the clear coat. The clear coat needs to be reformulated or something. Maybe it has been for 2016 but I don't want to test that theory :P

Can't go with that look entirely since our hood is aluminum.

This is only a problem with cars made in some countries, like America. My past cars were made-in-Germany Audi and BMW never had paint issues and the paint is very thick.

I lightly dragged a cardboard box across my FR-S bumper recently. I expected some scratches, sure, but I got a penny size piece of paint missing instead :(

How's the harbor freight orbital? There's one that's a 10 minute drive from my house and I want to work on fixing the clear coat that I scratched.

Key words there are "in the past". Europe is spearheading the reduction of compounds and are outright banning many of the components that make paint stronger. This means that new cars there will have the same problems. This is a world wide program and is not restricted to the US and Japan. The biggest issue is that new paint technology is not progressing as fast as the regulations restricting what can be used are being put in place.

There is also a glaring discrepancy in what some of us are seeing for paint damage. I have many small impact dents where the paint is perfectly intact and the chips I do have were high enough velocity hits the paint on a tank would have chipped. Hell, I have a 3 inch long divot in my bumper where I was hit by debris and the paint is still perfect (see pic) but there are others that state they just wiped it and paint came off. Maybe different batches or colours are more susceptible to damage.
