gas mileage gauge fluctuation

Hey guys, what kind of fluctuation are you getting in your gas mileage gauge? My gauge will change and make large jumps and swings at what seems like random. Sometimes it will tell me I'm getting 7 miles to the gallon and other times it will say 86mpg. The biggest concern for me is that it doesn't always seem to be related to my throttle input. I can be at a constant throttle position in the same gear and it will change by 10mpg fluctuation constantly. Is this normal? I've seen some other cars with gas mileage gauges and they were never this inaccurate. Additionally, I feel like my gas mileage sucks for a 2.0L motor being driven relatively docile most days.

You will see fluctuations like that if you are in instantaneous mode...what does your average say in the average mode. Also, what hand calculated MPGs are you getting?

^^^^^^ THIS^^^^^^
You are in the wrong mode man!
Mileage is completely dependent upon your driving habits and where you have to drive. With my 98% highway driving on cruise I get a running average of 34 MPG. There are other guys that have long stop and go city commutes or just like to accelerate that get 18 or 20.

Stop and go traffic? Sitting there idling? Don't try and hypermile it? Get frustrated and stomp on the gas every once and while? Get ready for low 20's even high 10's gas mileage.

50 mph flat/downhill road no wind with a drafting buddy? 40 mpg.

It's all in the drive cycle, you can really only improve it by a couple points by driving smart and they'll disappear in an instant if you can't exercise self control.

Then again, what's a couple bucks here or there compared to hitting 7,200 rpm on the off-ramp?
