A/C operation
Now that it is starting to get hot as fuck outside here in oklahoma, i have been using the air conditioner. Its terrible, takes forever to cool and usually only does any good at over 40 mph. My 15 year old truck has a better air conditioner.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Is the a/c just shitty on all of our cars? |
Mine works great.
|
mine's fine too but it works best when I start in the garage and takes alittle longer if sitting outside in the heat. But overall, works better than other cars I've had, and better than my wifes 2010 CRV
|
Mine works fine.
I suggest you leave a window down at first to blow out the hot air. Are you using the "recirc" button .....? ...... makes a big difference. humfrz |
My A/C works better than my 2015 Malibu. It's actually one of the coolest A/C's I've ever had.
|
For a A/C unit that uses R134a, I agree with the others this is one of the best ones I've used. Many are merely acceptable or reasonably good, this one is actually excellent. I usually leave it on the auto setting and rarely has it needed to be full blast for a long time whereas some of the work cars I use need full blast the whole time, particularly the cheap econoboxes. The only thing it can't beat is the older R12 A/C units.

My a/c kicks in within 14 seconds when it's supper hot so that I feel it. 6 seconds when its not hot. I've tested it out several times. Have you pressed the a/c button? A/c low? Checked compression? Ducts clean?

I don't understand how people say this is the best AC they have had. This AC system plainly SUCKS balls. Out of my 20 min drive, depending on rpm the damn thing is simply blowing air. Yes I know about the AC button and recirculating and my car has 4,000 miles.
Simply said, I have never had another vehicle that blows cold air, just air, then cold air again. Quite the most hated part of this car for me. Specially here in Florida and that I have to wear a long sleeve and tie everyday. By the time I actually cool down I just pulled into work. Edit: in a less frustrated explanation. Give you a run down of every morning..... I go outside and turn the car on, lower the windows, let the idle settle and then turn on the air. Ofcourse cold air doesn't come right away I am ok with that. What bothers me like fucking hell is that after a minute air starts to blow cold. When I put the car in first gear to take off boom, blowing regular non cooled air. Not for another 2 minutes before it starts to blow cold. Then normal air again then back to cold once I am CRUISING. also if I understand correctly these systems "deactivate the compressor under high throttle load"? Which is ok if I was at 5,000 rpm. My shit blows normal air even cruising. In fact sometimes when cruising if I am getting hot air I accelarate and it starts to cool |

I suppose we need more responses, but so far it seems that "works fine" is the normal condition, and that you and OP are outliers. Maybe you two ought to get your AC checked. |
It can get hot here in Texas, but my A/C works just fine cooling me down.
|
Agreed with OP, my 25 year old pickup truck has better A/C (R12 better? idk) that kicks in faster, cools the cabin faster (even though it's a giant glass house with shit insulation) and blows colder under 40 mph and at idle.
But I have no complaints about the A/C in the 86, it's adequate. The fact that it heats up the air noticeably when it is supposed to be pulling fresh air bothers me more, and that probably has a lot to do with why the A/C really doesn't blow cold at idle. Waah my sports car A/C isn't powerful enough, first world problems. My father likes to remind me that I totaled his first vehicle with A/C in it that he bought in 2001. :iono: |
I'm on Georgia these days (thanks, Army) and it has been 95+ for the last two months. A/C in mine seems to work just fine unless I'm flooring it between stoplights.
|
It has been hitting 95-100 here in South Carolina and my A/C regularly is too cold for me. I typically drive with it on the 2nd or 3rd lowest setting, low fan speed, and the vent near the driver door closed.
|
I'm in South Georgia, any further South and I would live in Florida. It was 96 yesterday, car said it was 100 but my AC worked great. My FRS AC works as good or better than any other car I've owned and I've owned a bunch of cars since 1969. No complaints with the FRS AC.
