Total lost
My insurance company deem my car is a total lost. I am getting a check for 19k - 2.7k of what i owe. Should i go the same FRS/BRZ route or go off with a new car? Any tips would be great.
|
That sucks, sorry to hear it!
If you liked the car, get the car again.. if you want to try something else, get something else.. |
Buy it back and fix it.

The very fact that you are asking the question would show you have some doubts. |
The car itself was a very fun experience, never had any problems with it beside the famous cricket noise. I wanted to run the car down midohio within the next couple months. There are a several of options such as an 2008 M3 for 21,500, 2009 SLK 350 for 23,000, 13 brz limited for 19k. After getting some scholarship funds recently and paying off my school fees, am able to be debt free to purchase a car under 21k. anything over that would mean i would have to take out a loan.

Wait for the 2016 model. It's a game changer.
|
Buy the new Mazda Roadster (Miata), mod it, sell it, by then the next FR-S will be out. Buy that. Nuff said.

Though honestly OP if I were in your position, I'd get another car. I love my FRS but life is short and there's a lot of different cars out there to drive! |
The new Camry looks nice

Sure you won't win any races with it, but if I had to pick a responsible sedan it would've been my choice. |

I've come to the conclusion that if this happened to me I would not buy an FR-S again. Fantastic car, I will miss it if it ever leaves me and I have no intention of selling it but I want to try something different. You have a golden opportunity OP, go explore your options, more powerful hot hatches, pony cars, S2000, the new Miata is badass along with WRX (although maybe out of your price range) or any number of fantasy cars in the price range that struck your fancy (older Porsche, some classic sports car from the 90's, 80's hell even 60's and 70's or 50's). Hopefully you can borrow a car for a few weeks or insurance provides a free rental or something so you can take your time deciding what you want. There is without a doubt though, nothing like the 86 available so I totally understand this car being the 'perfect match'.
You're sitting on ~$16.3k, if you decide you really want an FR-S/BRZ again I would keep an eye on the classifieds here and fly out to the one that is closest to what you want (color, transmission, options), there are usually 3-4 available for less than $19k (I even think there are 2 under $17k last I checked) and assuming the car is good drive it back home, a nice roadtrip to familiarize yourself with your new buddy. :burnrubber: |
Buy Gap insurance on the next one......
but yeah... I would go C5 vette, 04-06 GTO, or a 4th gen Fbody if you have never had anything like that at this point in time. |
I would love to go frs/brz again but only in whiteout. I would never buy it new and its impossible to find a whiteout in my area for a decent price. The nearest whiteout cost around 26k for a 2014. I'm not really into american icon cars.
I'm looking for a fun car that i could easily messed around with and do simple maintenance. I was looking at a miata 08+, genesis coupe 13+, z4 06+, or an A5 2011+ but there are none avail. Most miata are either played out or beaten up. oh, dont get me started on the newer ones. As for the genesis there are only new 2014 & 2015 on dealership lot. Would really love a used one. For the Z4, its an okay car but the s2000 would be a lot nicer if i can find one. Finally the A5, THE PRICE OF THIS CAR IS TOO DAMN HIGH!. Best one i could find was for 90k mile for 25k. Car buying is a pain in the ass, you can never get what you want unless you have $$$$ to burn. Anyways, any other suggestions? Something with a bit more interior such as a c300 but coupe. My mom owns a camry and i loved it until someone had the nerves to key the sht out of it -.- |

For what it's worth, I'd probably buy another one if I lost mine.

You need GAP insurance if you are financing enough of the purchase price that you'll be upside down on the loan at some point. He had so much equity in the car from the very beginning that it was virtually impossible for him to ever be upside down on that loan. |
RS1 cost about 30k... and its yellewwwwww. would jump on it if it was 10k cheaper lol. BTW i will be selling a few things from my frs. Still have brand new white sidemarkers, new rain visor, new winjet fogligth assembly with switches and interior mount, and a u used advance keys pushbutton/remote start.

Buy whatever you want, new twin, used twin, another car...whatever.. Why anyone would ask a bunch of strangers is beyond me. If you want mo' powah get a "Stang. Or just spend the money on hookers and blow and buy a used shitbox. Thats my default choice. Dont blame me if you get herpes.

Anyways, I'd buy a Twin again if this happened to me. |

Can't really buy hookers atm. Not really a free man. Drugs are a meh for me.. only thing rhat get me high is the thrill of a nice ride.. have anyone own a 335i? Twin turbo with a decent interior. Worried about issues down the road. Just asking people for their opinion about cars. Don't want to jump the gun and get a car that I'll have to stick with for the next 4 years. Love the frs for it's uniqueness and handle but hate it for the dang crickets and torque. Anyone here own a genesis coupe before? Haven't test driven one since I don't have any mode of transportation. Come on folks... BlackJesus always got your back. Remember all the sins yall commited? He died for yall sins..

Id consider a 2.0t genesis. Lots of modding potential, and most of the issues ive heard about them have been resolved from aftermarket/oem solutions from what i understand.
Id also consider a g35. For some reason they arent the most popular platform but the few owners ive talked too seem to really love them and they are fairly reliable to boot. Also maybe even a slightly older lexus GS/LS/IS? Maybe a Civic Si? You got some money to play with so consider all your options. |
I'd get that Miata ND
|
All things considered if lost my frs I would buy a used GS350.
|
Having owned my BRZ now, for 8 months or so, I'd honestly be happy to buy another. I can't speak for the older gen ones, but the MY15 has enough of all the bells and whistles, rides surprisingly smoothly (for such a low and handling focused car) and still makes me all giddy and excited to climb into on the drive to work each day. No car is perfect, but nothing else (for me) really comes close to licking so many of the boxes that are important (again to me).
Also if you list out all the things you wish the FRS had, would a higher spec'd model have been a better fit in the long term? Is there any chance you can rent any of the cars you are looking at, just to get a better feel for whether they are a better click for you? |
Sorry to hear your FR-S got messed up.....:(
If you are young and single and not too tall and liked to drive your FR-S and never had a roadster, I'd suggest you take a ND (the new one) Miata for a test drive......;) I drove a 2006 NC for 7 years and 88,000 touring miles and enjoyed every mile. mrs humfrz, not so much ..... however, she does like our FR-S .... humfrz |

For now buy what you can afford. Then when you graduate from college & get a steady job with a secure income then buy a nice sports car. You got your whole life ahead of you. As my late grandfather used to tell me, "A car will always be there, You want it that badly then go work for it". Nuff said.
|
buy the car that make you the most happy.
|
Buy a drop top Datsun 510.

LS1/2/3/6 equipped vehicles are much easier maintenance than these cars and can get upper 20's MPG with a six speed manual. Easy to mess around with? Obviously they checkmark that. Just saying, if you've never even considered a car like that...don't limit yourself to a miata or a genesis. Get 8x the performance for 1/2 the cost, lol. |

I read the other day you were a broke ass college student. If that's the case, I would stay away from the M3 or SLK350 or Porsche. You can get them at an affordable price, but keeping them well maintained and keeping them on the road is going to cost far more.
Just look at tires - the M3 is running 265/35r19 on the back - even "cheap" tires that size are going to be $250 or more. the stock PSS on it are like $450 each. And the M3 absolutely chews through back tires. You have to look past the sticker price. New set high performance tires for the FR-S are about $450 without any rebates. Those same tires would be $1100-1400 on the M3. |
Prolly going with a miata if I could find one. These things are pretty damn rare to find one in a decent shape.
