To get the look everyone is wanting, you need to look at the r-type design. The ones being installed are f8 or f8f design.

I've looked into this. To get that retro look, with lip, there's a narrow window that works. A 15x7 zero offset, or 15x8 +10 offset. Or you could get 16's, but if it were me, I'd go 15's. This will poke the same as a 18x9.5 +30, which many people have fitted.

You're not getting 17" r types, it would look stupid. If you want the retro wheel look, you have to commit to the retro sizing.

Those 17" sizing are all going to have the same f8 or f8f face, no matter what the offset. They just leave more material on the inside of the centre of the wheel.

Guys ...just start a groupbuy for the low-offset RKRs with Wheeldude and call it a day.

As far as needing 15s or 16s for that retro look, I have to disagree.. the new 86 has huge diameter wheel wells and big protruding fenders.. and 17s are fine/perfect for it (not too big, not too small..and most importantly, the same diameter as oem). 15s and 14s look good/perfect on retro cars, mainly because those retro cars came with 14s and 15s oem/stock; so keep it stock size and it'll look fine. Many old school wheels are coming out in 17s for the 86/brz, because anything smaller would just look silly and out of place on the car - ie: Hayashi 17s, etc.

Ya, i know whatcha mean.. that's why my 1st/best choice out of all the wheels I've seen so far, that are both inexpensive/affordable and still quality, are the Gram Light 57DR ...close 2nd are the RPF1.

But I can't lie.... knockoff Watanabe Rota RKR's in pure flat Black would look pretty darn ill in a 17x8.5" et10 or 17x8" et0 or et5 (and these aren't even in the negative offsets yet; but have a totally sufficient deep-dish & big-lip look ;))

The Essex Sprint Kit fits in these wheels?

Well, I figure there aren't enough people with these posting on here to make it worthwhile to start another thread for different sizing.

So here are some shots of my 17x8 +35 F8s on the car from the test fit this weekend.

Stock suspension with OEM crash bolts (maybe -1°). Tires are 225/45 ZII Star Specs.

(Sorry for the crappy phone camera)

Based on other pictures of the 17x8 +35s on stock suspension, I was expecting more poke. I guess that -1° of camber really makes a difference visually.

Unfortunately winter isn't over in Chicago, so I had to swap my winter setup back on today. But they look awesome in person, I couldn't stop looking for the day or so that they were on the car. haha Should look even better when they go back on, along with SACHS Performance coilovers, RCE camber plates, and Whiteline LCAs.

Through a contact in Japan.

They do have a U.S. rep/distributor though. Shoot Watanabe's contact email a message saying what you're looking for and they'll put you in contact with them.

Shark Bait88: what was their weight?

Shark_Bait88 02-29-2016 08:31 AM

I stupidly forgot to weigh them before getting the tires on, but according to their site the 17x8s are 8.7Kg (~19lbs). So not really lightweight, but still wider and lighter than stock.
