Definitely won't need over fenders for that.
16x8 +0 should be able to fit without much issue. Would be even easier if the car is lowered on coilovers.

very curious how you figure that.

I think I figured out why people aren't liking these wheels as shown: offsets too tame and no lip

We have fit 18x9.5 +28 without any issues in the rear with 245/35/18
We have also fit 18x9.5 +28 with 225/40/18 up front. with still about 3-5mm clearance from the fender.
Camber was only at approximately 1.75 degrees.

16x8 +0 wheels would sit approximately 5-7mm further out then the 18x9.5 +28, but with the given clearance between the tire and fender, it should clear with slight tweak of camber. The rears with the 16x8 +0 should be easy.
Now if he wanted to run 255's or something on the 16x8 - would run into fender clearance issues up front for sure.

Aside from those issues, this will be the look that is emulated when the 2013 is vintage.

Looking at the Watanabe site, it doesn't look like the magnesium come in the 17x8, and the non-magnesium in that size are 8.7kg (~19lbs)...

+1

These wheels only looked good with negative offsets and 15-16".

All these pics of narrow width and/or high offset watanabes on the 86 are frustrating. These are one of the most perfect wheels to go with the gt86. These desperately need to be at least 17x9 with at least a et35 or et30 offset (or, a much lower offset for a narrower 7-8" width - like et0-et20).

Does anyone have pics and/or know if a 17x9 watanabe in an et30 or et35 offset would have a noticeably bigger lip and look much nicer (compared to all these pics of unattractive high-offset 7-8" et40-et50 wheels)?

17X9 et30-35 isn't that crazy (it's not like a et0 or negative offset); so it's relatively still a little mild/conservative and very realistic. I'm wondering why no one has at least mounted a 9" et30-35 yet?! ...17x9 et30-et35 would be puuuurfect :D

btw:
Rota makes(has molds and is listed in their website) RKR replicas in 17x8 and 17x8.5 with 5x100 in nice low offsets of et0, et5, et10 and even available in the negatives. I can see an 8"+5 or 8.5"+10 easily fitting the 86 without any major problems nor modifications (except coilovers). These would be a fantastic alternative to real(and expensive) Watanabes and would weigh similar to the Watanabe non-magnesium versions anyways (not to mention you make a fuss and cry if you damage one at the track).

Wheeldude says he only needs 3-4 confirmed preorders, for Rota to fire up the kiln and press some new wheels for a special order ;)
