Test drove a 2011 C63 AMG

Tried out a 2011 C63 AMG today which I have liked for a while from seeing all the youtube reviews on the car. To be honest, left me underwhelmed. First the good. The acceleration is pretty awesome! I feel like there should be a bulk speeding ticket package for these things (like 3 speeding passes for $1k). Pretty easy to hit triple digits. Unfortunately, rode in a friend's tesla S 60 one time and that felt like a harder acceleration (think that experience ruined a lot of other cars for me). The suspension was solid. Not much dive or lean in turns. It does crash a bit over rough patches. The interior is solid being a Merc and all even with the older C class design. Actually decent amount of rear seat room.

Now the negatives. While the exhaust sounds sweet with the windows down, it just sounds kind of exciting with everything buttoned up. Guess I was expecting more from the exhaust. The worst however is the transmission. It's an auto but it takes a few tenth to shift. That just drives me nuts. The engine will just hang out at whatever rpm you hit the up shift at for a sec or so. No bueno with performance auto box it would seem. There goes the IS F as well.

Am I nuts for not liking this car that so many auto journalist rav about? I was hoping to be blown away by this thing esp. at almost $70k new price tag. Guess I don't see the point of having this AMG as the second car. It'll depreciate quite a bit if one drives it too much, but it doesn't feel special enough to be just a weekend fun car. Anyway, I know folks here look at IS F sometime, just thought I share my experience with something similar.

Unless you go DSG or twin clutch most autobox gonna fee like that. The ISF isn't that bad for an 8 gear transmission.

AMG's depreciate in value heavily when a new model comes out. ISF on the other hand will hold value very well for a while. The M156 V8 is also a very problematic motor.

Of course you're not nuts for not liking a car journalists like, journalists are paid to have opinions, they pick out a best truck and a best eco sedan and a best luxury coupe and a best hypercar every year, if you have no interest in trucks and eco sedans then who gives a fuck which one is best?

I have no interest in AMG, if you handed me the keys to one and told me the model number in a full garage I'd be stumped, reading badges and pressing the lock button to find which one it is. I'd then drive it home and likely put it up for sale so I could buy 4 cars more interesting to me for the money.

Although if it was a wagon I'd probably keep it for the gf...

I owned an 09 for four years. It was an excellent jack of all trades with huge amounts of power available with just exhaust and tune. Stiffer springs and better tires wake the handling up as well. It was kind of cool having a 4 door with relative luxury that could run mid elevens as well.

Hell yea... I love the sleeper status until people ask, "You have 4 exhaust"? LOL

You Autocrossed a large supercar meant to be stretched out on a track, not on 20mph cones.

I'm not going to be taking the RS7 to the cones unless i want some shit and giggles.

To be fair it was a little bit faster than 20mph. We got up to about 60/70 how ever I think the cars were abused because even in a small straight away from 70 down to 20 or so I had brake fade (non carbon ceramics) either way Made me much happier about my FRS no matter which type of the course lol

Those pay to drive cars are horribly abused. I've considered going for a drive in one but i don't like someone else telling me how to drive or to stop using the handbrake.

:bellyroll: surprisingly my local autox people were running it and they knew me so they just let me have a rip at it, definitely interesting to say the least.

Yellow_Jacket 07-05-2015 12:38 AM

Wow, autox a lambo would be pretty sweet just for the noise alone (or just be a cone worker with it going by). Good points everyone. If I had the money to take the depreciation hit, C63 would be a great everyday driver. However, just doesn't seem special enough for a weekend fun car. Looks like my next car to try is an E46 M3 manual with lowest mile reasonable. If that still doesn't seem that exciting then looks like fast sports sedans just ain't my thing. Hope everyone had an awesome 4th! Really want to just shoot off fireworks from the car while driving down the highway.
