What are the best headers in your opinion?

I'm looking into getting some headers soon, but there are a few out there. I like borla headers, but I won't knock any other ones. Just looking for some helpful advice.

scottxnizzle 06-26-2015 11:51 AM

I heard the Tomei UEL header is pretty nice. I plan on getting a header soon too!

Kostamojen 06-26-2015 12:42 PM

Best or Best you can afford?

xxBrun0xx 06-26-2015 01:22 PM

Depends on what tune you end up with. If you're going OpenFlash, it's hard to beat their header because the tunes are specifically calibrated to that header's runner lengths, meaning you'll probably make the most power with one of these. If you're custom tuning, obviously there are a lot more options.

copafeel 06-26-2015 01:32 PM

Ptuning EL header

DAEMANO 06-26-2015 01:43 PM

Most headers for this platform make roughly the same power after a DD safe tune within about 8 WHP. So differences tend to come down to design (UEL vs EL), construction, materials, and price. Generally speaking a more expensive header tends to have better construction than a cheaper one to a point. After which, like any consumer good, you start paying for the name.

ramiram1984 06-26-2015 01:49 PM

FOR LIGHTWEIGHT: BORLA UEL.

OTHERWISE: TOMEI UEL :D

Ace Header
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88696

Testing is still ongoing but so far the results have been huge for 86/brz platform.

cjd 06-26-2015 02:52 PM

Ace or Nameless
Tune is of course required.

TKShu22 06-26-2015 04:12 PM

Gruppe-s is a great option and price is just right for the quality.

kch 06-26-2015 04:32 PM

JDL UEL has unbelievable build quality and sounds orgasmic. Completely eliminates the torque dip, too, with a tune.

AREN 06-26-2015 04:41 PM

In terms of UNequal headers, look at JDL or Tomei.

Not trying to thread jack but can we add what header with or without tune too
I'm not ready to tune yet, but am looking for an uel

D_Thissen 06-26-2015 05:07 PM

Will it work? Yes. Will it work well? No. You wont see the full benefit with out a tune. You will probably get a check engine light after about 100km as well. I think the is P0420 (or something like that) it has to do with not having a main cat.

Jfheisenberg 06-26-2015 05:07 PM

I see that the headers are too expensive and plus you are likely to get the CEL if you dont do a tune at the same time :S.

Im just got my catback and catless frontpipe so im just going to add an overpipe and then just call it a day with the exhaust work.

I thought there was one company that perfected the no cel header?

FloridaBRZ 06-26-2015 05:14 PM

First mod I did was the headers. I chose Tomei UEL. Installed easily and without a tune didn't throw a CEL at all. Definitely opened up the motor, increased throttle response as well as that rumbly boxer sound we all adore. You will get WAY more from a header than any other exhaust component IMO. Tomei are titanium, well built, and, to me, are well worth the 700ish you will spend on them.

Thanks for the confirmation Tomei is on my list
back to you OP

I think FT86 speed factory has a catted UEL header that won't throw a code. But I might be mistaken, hopefully someone can confirm either way.

Freddy@PTUNING 06-26-2015 05:47 PM

No CEL with the Ptuning header, even with no cat in the over pipe.

It'll work. It'll go KABOOM though. :brokenheart:

kuczynskika 06-26-2015 05:51 PM

Cosworth! If you have the cash tho... the full system is tremendous!

mav1178 06-26-2015 05:51 PM

We just released some really nice Unequal headers for a good price. Let me know if you want more info.

$475 plus ship. O.P is extra, here is a pic

UEL?

D_Thissen 06-26-2015 09:43 PM

EL I think.

TM 06-26-2015 09:44 PM

Here's a compilation of different headers and their dyno charts: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31555

It's hard to compare, since they're all from different places and have different mods, tunes, etc., but it's a good starting point.

bizintine 06-26-2015 10:06 PM

Been debating what header to go with myself. My tuning shop said they've had good results with both borla and tomei. I personally would go with the tomei. Just seems like a better quality header. Little heavier though.

I have been very happy with my cheap Top Speed EL header. Welds were good and fit was perfect. Less than 400 bucks and I love the sound.

Our Ptuning header is EL, no cat, no CEL and as others were saying, it is highly recommended to get the vehicle tuned once the header is installed.

Are you sure that's not their "UEL"? Only reason I ask as this one says "EL" in the title and costs slightly more also.

Not sure I guess. Looks EL length to me and you can compare my pictures to the link I posted. All I know is I thought it was a very good header for the money. I believe they also make it in a catted version.

The last time I read that insanely long thread there were some reports of a CEL thrown on stock tunes during highway cruising (I think)

Yeah I thought they looked EL as well. Oh well

Now that you mention it man, I think you are right.

BRZtoni 06-27-2015 09:39 PM

TOMEI UEL.. <3

canadaRS1.0 06-27-2015 10:32 PM

so everyone knows you dont get the full benefit of the headers without a tune, and it will impact AFR's... but no one ever seems to confirm how...

if you run a header without a tune.. does it run lean? or rich?

im cool with CEL's, and im cool with running rich... im not cool with running lean

or does no one know because people who buy headers without a tune are too cheap to dyno test? lol

This is true, we just know its "not advised"
although, why would you want to run rich? doesn't that foul the plugs?

Chimera 06-29-2015 10:21 AM

I'll try not to thread jack here, for the CEL can you just wire in a resistor, or would this have undesirable side effects?
