Cracked block
2 Attachment(s)
Overheated the engine during qualifying and must have cooked the head gaskets.
During the race, water was spraying on the windshield and (like a greedy asshole) never stopped because was 6th overall and 2nd in class. Car was still running when shut down, but after closer inspection a 6" diamond hole is now at the top of the engine block. So to the other racers, these engines don't like heat and this area seems to be easily stressed. [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lr1Sidt91a8"]2015 TSF rd2 - YouTube[/ame] |
I'd say that's more than a crack. Ouch!

nothing a little bubblegum wont fix

Ouch! Yeah. I have found that the castings on this motor are super brittle. On my blown motor, I managed to crack the valve cover somehow. Probably a sharp impact on the strut tower brace mount when removing it. I am now super careful when working on this motor. No over torques or sharp impacts on any of the aluminum castings.

Repairable without pulling?

Buy a new short block since you are apparently made of money.
|
Do you have an oil cooler installed?

These cars really can't handle heat. Very annoying since its a damn 2.0L under 200hp.
|
Oh that?...
It's a common problem when racing on tiny go-kart tracks. :D But seriously that track is tiny. The fact that you're even touching 4th gear suggests you have a different rear end to shorten your ratios. Anything else you think may contribute to this? Solid motor mounts combined with excessive curb usage? Over torque of a bolt in that area? Seems strange that piece would break like that without being caused by catastrophic internal failure. |
I would be interested to hear if you had oil temperature / pressure monitored and if you had an oil cooler.

How do you know that the crack didn't come first and the overheating/water spray wasn't a side-effect?
