Have you installed a short throw shifter recently? Try putting the car in neutral then lifting up on the center lever/hub/thing and putting into reverse.

No I haven't installed a short shifter. I tried that, it goes into reverse... But my concern is the lock doesn't work. Going from gear one to reverse with out using that lever.

On a normal FRS it would not allow you to get into reverse with out lifting that lever.

Oh, I see. If you're still under warranty, I'd take it to the dealer. That's not something I have much experience or knowledge about.

I presume this is the same car that has been sitting for a year .... ??

If so, I'd suggest you get the transmission good and warmed up ..... then give the mechanism a good workout.

If that doesn't work, you may have to get into the transmission turret and lub it up.

Sounds frightening! I remember reading that the position of the lockout is precise (for those installing short throws). It may be worth checking out, although I would sooner go to the dealer (warranty?) as pulling apart the console sounds tedious for diagnostics.

Excercise the lock out collar 20-30 times if the car has been sitting for that long. The reverse lock out collar may be binding. So pull it up all the way then push it down all the way. See if that helps. Have you changed the shift knob? That could also cause an issue. There is an adjustment for the reverse lockout under the shift boot. It sounds like you might be best off taking it to the dealer.

You might need to adjust the lockout
