EPA checks and Tomei or any other Catless Headers
 

A question for those that are running a catless header.

I'm looking at purchasing the Tomei Catless UEL header but have concerns regarding it passing one of the EPA on the spot checks now popping up around Melbourne. In addition to this I have the Nameless FP with the HF 200 cell cat fitted.

My question is will the 200 cell HF Nameless cat in the FP be enough to pass an EPA check?

do they actually do gass analysis at the roadside check or just have a look, then send you to proper inspection station if it looks suspect ??

It is an offence to fart, it is an offence to breath, it is an offence to exist on this planet UNLESS it is to help fatten up the freemasons bank account :( Seriously WHY would the epa concern themselves with modern day motor cars whose emissions are already low ? If these idiots are seriously concerned about the state of air quality on this planet they would abolish the burning of coal fire stations worldwide INCLUDING those popping up all over China - the biggest polluter in the world by a big margin. THAT would have a dramatic & instant effect right there, not penalising a tax paying motorist driving a brand new car :|

"Roadside operations
EPA officers also conduct roadside operations in conjunction with Victoria Police, VicRoads, Department of Justice Sheriffs, Victoria Taxi Directorate and other enforcement agencies. Vehicles are inspected and tested by EPA for compliance with the Regulations. Owners of non-compliant vehicles usually incur fines, notices prohibiting the use of the vehicle (similar to a Police unroadworthy notice) or legal notices, as described in the tampering program above. From 2004 to 2010, approximately 11,000 vehicles were inspected during these roadside operations. On average there has been a 53 per cent failure rate for vehicles inspected."

In the old days if they couldn't see anything wrong they just sent you for a test and you had time to change things back to OEM making the whole exercise just a time waiting effort. Now with more sophisticated equipment it's a lot easier to test on the spot.

I've read posts of people fitting uncatted headers with SC installs then getting them engineer certified with the headers fitted. From everything I've read from the EPA this should be impossible.

There are grey areas then there are very grey areas..

Steve their on the roadside gas analyser is about as accurate as a speed estimate = very accurate :lol:

A stock 86/BRZ doesn't even pass most the time :/

Find that very hard to believe but if you have expert knowledge or facts share them.

I'd still like a definitive answer to my OP. Too much of an outlay just on the off chance they may be legal and might pass a EPA check.

Are you sure they dont just have a handheld analyser at roadside and if it indicates you way off or they see no cats visually then they send you for full test as per above

Yes and great post by him. The fact he was able to get his car certified with SC and catless Skunk2 headers DOES appear to confirm that one cat in the exhaust system is enough to pass an EPA test. At least if you have or are considering the Kraftwerks SC.

Perhaps the answer is to find out what the OEM FP and Header cats add up to as far as cell count and then make sure that number is in the exhaust somewhere.

I'll contact ProjectBRZ thru YouTube and see how he was able to pass the EPA test with, apparently, a single cat.

There has to be a black and white solution. I want a header before the falling $AU goes much lower.

Just had a reply re my last post.

"I passed emissions using the stock headers. you won't pass with catless headers. My Skunk2 headers are just for off street use :)"

So that's the closest I can find to a definitive answer...that now explains why "For off road use only" is normally prominently displayed on sellers websites.

Well I bought a set of the Tomei anyway.

Don't know how smart it was but what the hell. I'm not looking to put them on till after car runs out of warranty in March next year. Worst case scenario I get caught and they end up on eBay or classified section here. Perhaps someone will bring out a front pipe with the required 2 cats in it or a super single HF cat that'll pass EPA testing.
