Smells like leaking gas in the car..

I have recently started to smell leaking gas like when you leave a gas stove on. I dont know how to replicate the problem, it comes very randomly. I started to first notice it after a track day. It was pretty hot probably around 20-25 degrees that day. After the track day while I was driving home, I could smell leaking gas. That was about a month ago. Now from time to time I can smell it . It DOES smell like its coming from near where the location of the gas tank is. It usually happes when driving a decent amount of time on the highway. Anyone have this problem? I was thinking of taking it into the stealership for warranty but Just scared to with the few mods that I have.

Gas? Dealership or this: Attachment 112594 you decide. Gasoline not a good thing to be timid about.

As long as it's not an aftermarket fuel pump causing a leak, there should be no issue with this being a warranty claim.

Leaking fuel is not safe. Ever. It's a free repair, make your appointment now!

Have you checked around the tank and filler hose? Shouldn't be that hard to track down.. have you done a flex fuel kit?

Visconti ever touch your car?

No tune, I've tried to locate a fuel leak around and can't see. Only thing I have is suspension. Could LCA and that's it. Guess I'll book an appointment. I just hope they don't nail me for my suspension. And I'm scared that they might fuck up my rims

If you're referring to a natural gas stove, that smell is the mercaptan (smells like rotten eggs) which is added to the natural gas as a odorant. Now, the same smell can be generated by the combustion products frfom the engine after passing through a catalytic converter.

So, is what you're smelling, more like rotten eggs OR raw gasoline ... ??

(you folks didn't know I was that smart .... huh .. ?? ...... :happyanim:)

what humfrz said.

I had that issue on my pickup once @ smog time. Mechanic took catcon off, smacked it, and told me to drive it for like 50miles. Returned after 50 miles, smell gone.

...which reminds me... i need to buy a new one now!

I am going to try to smell it carefully but from what all my passengers say it does smell like natural gas. I have a track date coming up.......should i avoid it?

Have you "messed with" the exhaust system ..... ??

(it could be a leak or your cat conv is messed up)

If the smell is coming from the exhaust, my experience is that this happens to my car every now and then ...... usually after a cold start, when I'm backing out of the driveway. Nothing to worry about.

If the smell is coming from raw gasoline, I'd suggest you have it looked after ASAP (as suggested above).

I'm fighting injector issues and #3 has stuck open a few times... stinks like gas in the car as it flouds the engine. If you try too much to start it you can blow away the starter.

Injector 3 wire was grounding out and flouding the cylinder. Gas lock blew off the starter but everything is fine now.
