Techron/Fuel Additives Question
Here in California we are treated to a paltry 91-octane super unleaded as are best choice (unless u find a specialty shop) to fill up with, so I was considering adding some Techron or some other octane boost/FI cleaner to my next fill-up. I saw in the manual it says not to add any "fuel system cleaners" to the gas tank. Just curious if anyone has had any issues with using these products? Thanks.

This is why I don't go to third party / gas stations that offer discounted gas without additives. Also by fuel system cleaners, they mean the kinds that AutoZone tries to upsell you on every time you go in. |
I have used Seafoam motor treatment in my car without issue. Only about 2x, just over 20000. TBH I wouldn't bother with octane boosters, you'll never get the same mix every time and then your car is going to spend a lot of time from tank to tank learning its current Octane.

A bottle of octane booster from the store will probably add +0.1 to the octane level. It's pointless.

Have you seen evidence of our injectors/heads under even heavy E85 use before? It's pretty encouraging that we don't need to Seafoam or otherwise tamper with our maintenance schedule by and large. FA20 turning out to be a good engine :party0030: |
I'm of the opinion that most if not all fuel additives are snake oil at best.

I use Klotz Uplon (Klingon, I think) fuel lube. Cricket's don't like it. Like Shutter said, E85 is the answer. ETA: A tank of E85 is probably the best "cleaner" you can buy.

Honestly, its more habit than reasoned. It's not exactly expensive, though not cheap either really I guess.. Anyways, it cannot hurt I don't think, and it may help. I haven't had issues running tanks with an entire bottle of Seafoam. IIRC one was on 93 and the other was on e85. Running 93 right now. I won't make any claim at all that I would think you need to add motor treatment at all, but I did it both times while helping with my dads car (corvette around 180k) and my girlfriends car (acura rsx with issues......, around 120k) |
Stop with the Seafoam crap, right now.
