Axleback is quite muted - combined with an intake (or even better panel filter) it will sound great, but also grown-up enough to drive around town (you'll really hear it only when you give it the beans).
I have the SP Elite, and it definitely sounds good to me. I don't think either will really give much in terms of power for an NA car, so I'd just do it for the sound (gets rid of the tractor sound) |
Hey guys, I ended up going with the SP Axel Back and i love it. It's exactly like Daiheadjai is saying, a mature exhaust. You only really hear it when you turn on the car and when you get it some gas.
So yeah, extremely happy! I know the catback is cool and all cause you get the mid-pipe but i honestly don't race, don't really care for the 1hp gain from the mid-pipe and to me it's not worth $400.00 extra. Plus I don't plan to do all that much more to this car. Front pipe, tune and that's basically it. Won't do a header cause it seems too loud for me. Maybe in the future when I don't drive the car as much. Video i made [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va_4QlETESU"]FRS BRZ 86 Greddy SP Elite Exhaust Vs. Stock Exhaust - YouTube[/ame] |
Anyone know if its quieter or louder than the Q300??

Q300 is a pretty quiet exhaust... @iLaw picked it up with the Invidia Resonated front pipe and even he was slightly underwhelmed by the volume. Quieter is definitely the best if you plan on going headers as you need to remember that the Header will do MUCH MORE for performance than catback and front pipe combined.
Back to original thread -> you really don't need anything more than 2.25-2.5" piping if you are staying NA. 3" exhaust really only becomes efficient once you are getting into the 300-340whp range so the stock midpipe is more than enough for any bolt on N/A build, even with e85. The stock midpipe comes with a great resonator which deepens the sound. Although off topic I think the front pipe needs to be addressed as well. If you plan on going headers with an OFT, save your money and keep the stock front pipe. You will see and feel almost no difference between a full straight pipe and oem front pipe. The OEM front pipe has a resonator and exposed cat which cleans up the sound and makes road side MOT checks a breeze since you can easily point out the stock cat and be on your way before they even bother to check for your primary cat (from my experience) For further reading, which I'm sure some of you may have read I would take a look at this thread: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81493 And for further information regarding piping efficiency and how the exhaust works check out this link: http://www.exhaustvideos.com/faq/how...pipe-diameter/ |
Plus keeping the OEM front pipe will help cut down the rasp of a full catless system, as well as the smell ;)

Totally agree. I'm even part of the group that believes that if you cut out the cat in the OEM header and weld in a straight pipe that you would have yourself an extremely capable header meaning you could have an exhaust that sounds good and makes proper power for what, like $500 including a nice axle back...? Ive bought and sold a couple headers now and once you take off the heat shield the OEM header looks quality! plus its made from thick metal so it wont rasp like some other <$1000 headers |

had the revworks and nameless long tube headers |
Whoa, so wait....no front pipe for me than. I guess I'm better off getting the header and tune.
What's a quiet EL header? I don't like UEL, too loud. Also, would cabin noise increase with a header? |
In terms of noise - I rode in my friend's FRS with a Tomei UEL & Perrin Res catback. Yes more cabin noise than stock (from the footwell area especially) but it sure sounded great as the car felt...alive.
