Wow this is quite a bit. I'd start with swapping out functional items like seats, frameless rear view mirror, HIDs, etc. and leave alone anything that's just badge aesthetics as lower priority. Branding is transparent to me anyway since I know it's essentially the same car (Subaru/Toyota/Scion names are stamped all over the body).

add this to the interior

JDM sun visors are different from the FS-S

Do you have an image of them or a source? First I've heard of that and I can't find anything about them.

Thanks to you though, my searching has turned up some interesting Toyota Japan accessories for the 86:

I wasn't sure if they'd be the same or not, since apparently Subaru was trying to remove the Toyota logo inspired pattern from the car, but looking at images they seem to still have that pattern, even on the BRZ. Updating post.

Thanks guys, I already added them to the post as previously mentioned, with a picture from the BRZ, I'll add the image of the them in the Toyota though.

ESBjiujitsu 06-26-2012 10:46 AM

amazing information....more differences then i even realized!!!!

bayareakhiladi 06-26-2012 02:45 PM

I'm wondering if Scion will take it into consideration with the 2nd Generation FR-S to include add-ons that aren't available right now in US. Quite frankly I'm hesitant to go get the FR-S now, because I would rather have factory add-ons installed to keep the value of the car higher than aftermarket parts. Scion is about customizing your car, you can customize the TC thru Scion's website with TRD parts and other add-ons. Why not for FR-S!!!

Also other factory parts I wanted were: LED HID Headlamps, Fog lights, and Keyless entry system (Door handle sensor).

I dont want to get the FR-S now, and find out later in the 2nd Generation that these options are now available to add-on.
@Saber_TRD: Great Job! Thx.

You also forgot the JDM stereo is different than the USDM stereo.

If you're referring to the NAV/Receiver/Head Unit I left that out intentionally. The navs are region specific with their maps so JDM/EUDM wouldn't help, even with english. There's also nine(9) to choose from: http://toyota.jp/service/option/dc/n...ODE=86-b_00001

There are also two(2) standard CD/radio receiver/head units by the looks: http://toyota.jp/service/option/dc/a...ODE=86-b_00001

All of which are optional.

As for speakers, it gets odd:
Toyota: http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/navi-a...dio/index.html
GT and GT limited have 6 speakers
2x25mm tweets
2x160mm front door speakers
2x65mm rear quarter speakers

G has 2x160mm front door speakers only

RC has no speakers

Scion FR-S, both Canadian and American websites claim 8 speakers but do not display the locations.

The Canadian site has this description: "Immerse yourself in the ultimate audio experience. FR-S features eight precisely positioned speakers, including tweeters, instrument panel speakers, a woofer in each door and rear quarter speakers. The front and rear speakers are mounted high, creating a powerful, unified sound. Tweak your audio settings to customize your music to exactly the way you like it."

So it sounds like the GT/GT Limited setup, with 2 extra speakers squeezed in:
2x25mm tweets
2x160mm front door speakers
2x65mm rear quarter speakers
2x??mm instrument panel speakers

I'm not sure where these "instrument panel" speakers are or if they counted the tweets twice or something but it sounds like the FR-S actually has a one up on speaker count to the Toyota.

Checking Subaru Canada and USA, their sites list the BRZ as having 8 speakers, it seems Scion nabbed Subaru's speakers. Sadly they don't list where they are or their sizes either. Subaru Japan's site, well the way they did it auto-translators don't work so, I can't find my way around easily and I couldn't read about the system if I could find the right page. There were no nice charts like Toyota.jp has either.

Calidrifter 06-28-2012 02:46 AM

I was talking about the standard one. Which is of course way better looking in Japan.

That's what I'm getting at, there appears to be no "standard equipment" one. You pick one of the 11 available units or go without one if you like. Even on the GT 86 Limited. Note the lack of unit and a basic dash cover:

http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/interi...lor_img_01.jpg

Calidrifter 06-28-2012 01:24 PM

Hmm, then perhaps the radio delete should be added to the list.

Nezz 06-29-2012 01:34 PM

I can confirm the 86 comes with no stereo in Japan, you choose one from the list (or don't have one installed, of course, but that won't be popular, I don't imagine). Prices start from a few hundred bucks and go up into utter nosebleed territory -- we're talking a few thousand -- for the bluray mybook million-gigabyte special. With nav as an extra price for the maps! :eyebulge:

that said I'm more interested in smoker shields. I don't smoke but they keep rain out of my face, I'm a sucker for keeping the windows open a little. Or maybe the "driving support" system which tells you if you're close to other vehicles. On all four corners.

That would be inaccurate, as the car still has a stereo system (speakers, amp, etc.) The head unit is optional in the sense of you have a few to choose from or go without. So in a GT 86 Limited, for example, you could go without a head unit but you'd still have the other components in the car. It's basically for people who don't want to bother with a Toyota head unit and go for an aftermarket one. Anyone could do that if they wanted though, but this is part of the reason I left that out.

The factory option units are not suited for North American use and a delete isn't accurate unless you're going for an RC conversion in which case you'd be stripping everything anyway. Now, removal of the extra two speakers from the BRZ may be an option if you want to get that picky but again, I don't know where they are located.

Thanks for the confirm. The only reason I'd see going without as an option is if someone didn't like the Toyota head units and wanted to go with an after market one, save them the trouble removing.

Never heard those called "smoker shields" before, they're called rain guards around here. I'm curious what those do for smokers lol

This is a list of all differences I've found between the Toyota GT 86/Limited and the Scion FR-S that may be useful for anyone wanting to do a conversion or to see the differences. There may be more that I'm not aware of, so feel free to list them if I've missed any.

I have included images of each part that I could find images for, which is most. I've also included images of the Scion (and in some cases the Subaru) equivalent for comparison.

Edit: -If anyone has part numbers, I can add them to the list as that would be useful for anyone wanting to do a conversion.

Edit2: -Seen quite a few people in the thread say "Why did they take that out? I want that!" You can let Toyota/scion know that you want those options, do so at Toyota.com, Toyota.ca, Scion.com, and Scion.ca, they all have "Contact us" or "Contact" buttons hidden at the bottom of their pages or just click the links I gave you and they'll take you straight to the email contact forms.
-Added image of the under car covers to exterior.

Edit3: -Added Toyota Original accessories from Japan to the bottom of the list.
-Added vanity light sun visor to interior.
-Added image of auto-leveling interior controls.

EXTERIOR:

- Toyota LED HID Headlamps (Not the Subaru lights as they are different)[Will Require LHD version as well as wiring harness, balast, and there is an auto-leveling system, Subaru BRZ in N.A. has this system or a LHD EUDM. There is an interior control for the auto-leveling system as well, listed in interior section.]
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Subaru: http://image.motortrend.com/f/346295...e-headlamp.jpg
Scion (Halogen): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

Scion: http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h109ca916

- Fog lights (I've heard these are an incoming option for the FR-S.)
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(non-existant): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Clear Side marker lights
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(orange instead of clear): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Heated, side-rear-view mirrors - Possibly power folding. (Standard on the Canadian FR-S but no power folding. Not sure of US availability.)[Requires LHD version of the glass mirrors, I recall from Toyota Cavalier conversions, the mirror magnifications are different for driver and passenger sides. Unless you go with the non-power folding Canadian versions.]

- 86mm exhaust tips

Scion: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...3&d=1322712639

- Badgeing:
Toyota logo front and back, back also has Toyota word logo, as well as GT 86 badge on rear(supposedly EUDM special edition badgeing only?), and Toyota center caps for wheels. I'd have to double check on a production FR-S, but the 86 logo on the fender comes in black and red. The GT 86 Limited and GT86 is red, black is the G 86 and RC 86.

Scion center caps: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...7&d=1333574880

- Under car cover.
There are 4 sets of covers under the vehicle. The 4th and rear covers that protects the fuel tank has been reduced to only the left side, with exception to the GT 86 Limited having a full under cover. No other trim level has this, supposedly not even the Subaru BRZ limited has this, only the Toyota GT 86 Limited.
Full under car covers(Thanks to YankBoffin): http://www.covercars.com/cars/pictures/d/384476.jpg
Partial covers (Thanks to PERRIN_Jeff): http://blog.perrinperformance.com/wp...el-550x368.jpg
Legend for Partial Covers pic:
1- Large plastic shield
2- Thick Aluminum Panel
3- Fiberglass woven nylon panel
4- One plastic under panel
Best part is there are threaded holes on both sides to accept the JDM parts.

- Keyless entry system
It seems there is a difference between the Scion and Toyota keyless entry system for the GT86/Limited and may tie into the push start system. The exterior component to this system is the door handles, they have a touch sensor for locking/unlocking when the key fob is in proximity, obviously there's likely a proximity sensor as well. Will cover further in the interior section. [Not sure if there is a sensor on both sides or just the driver side, if just driver side, will need a LHD version.]

- High Grade Brake Pads from the GT 86 Limited (high μ pads)

INTERIOR:

- Colour Keyed interior From GT-86 Limited trim in Japan (Black and Red or solid Black with red stitching.)
- Steering wheel and airbag(for logo swap from Scion to 86 logo)[May require a LHD version depending on controls/paddles for A/T and how they're attached.]
- Leather/Alcantara Seats, front and back (with seat heaters and controls for center console, just behind the shifter and in front of the cup holders, the square indent. Rear seats appear to have a red stitching center leather armrest, not sure if one piece with rear bench or separate.)[Will require LHD versions for front seats.]
- Red Shift knob, Shift Boot (black with red stitching - Can't remember if the FR-S ditched the red stitching or not on this piece.)
- Red E-Brake handle (and the Black Brake handle boot, if it's not one piece, has red stitching as opposed to FR-S black stitching.)[May require a LHD version]
- Red Door handle inserts
- Red door sill
- Knee pads on sides of center console and around speakers on doors (Black leather with red stitching as opposed to the FR-S not having them.)

- OR Non-colour Keyed interior From GT86 Japan/Europe.
- Airbag (for logo swap from Scion to 86 logo)[Steering wheel only needed if FR-S wheel doesn't have red stitching, but I think it dose have that.]
- Four cloth options [images below][Requires LHD versions]
- E-Brake handle (Black with red stitching, including the Brake handle boot)[May require a LHD version]
- Shit boot and knob (Do not recall if the FR-S has the red stitching or not on both or just one of these.)
- Knee pads on sides of center console and around speakers on doors (leather with red stitching as opposed to the FR-S not having.)
Four Types of cloth seats, shown about 1/3 of the way down: http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/grade/grade2/index.html

- Dual-digital-climate-controls [There's a difference between RHD and LHD versions of the system. Also available on the BRZ Limited in N.A.]
This would replace the FR-S climate control section, below the clock and hazard light button. Has a toggle switch appearance and has 3 knobs with digital displays. The push start button is a part of this piece as well. Heard this requires a different wiring harness also.
Close up(RHD): http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/interi...g_figure05.jpg
Close up(LHD)[Also shows dash material where key ignition would be without push start.]: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...2&d=1331044395

- Push button start. [Also available on the BRZ Limited in N.A.]
Button is part of the Dual climate control "panel". There is likely a proximity sensor for the key fob that allows the vehicle to start as this removes the key insertion and leaves that space as flat dash material, so no key ignition slot. This same proximity sensor likely ties into the remote keyless entry system and external door handle touch sensors. [see images above.]

- Toyota Key Fobs(x2), smart entry and start system (This would be the "interior" part of the keyless entry system for the Toyota that ties into the push start. Likely a proximity sensor for the fobs within the car.)
http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/grade/...quipment14.jpg

- Toyota Floor Mats (Cloth and rubber, have Toyota and 86 logos as opposed to Scion and FR-S logos.)[Will need LHD versions] - Could not find pics of rubber mats.
Toyota Floor Mat: http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/interi...g_figure05.jpg
Scion: http://www.scion.com/images/cars/frs...s_carpetDs.jpg

Scion: http://photos.motoiq.com/MotoIQ/Feat.../jsn-002-L.jpg

- Auto-leveling system for LED HIDs, there is a control on the dash(?) for adjusting the Headlamps. [Requires LHD version(?), so likely EUDM or from N.A. Subaru BRZ]
Subaru Auto-leveling controls: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/brz/brz13-dash2.jpg

- Illuminated entry/Door courtesy lamp. FR-S has a reflector in the door as opposed to an actual light. (Subaru BRZ Limited in N.A. has the light as well, hole/space for lighting has been confirmed on the FR-S.)

How Can I get the fog Lights? And will they just fit Automatically on the FR-S?

Calidrifter 07-05-2012 12:22 AM

Word is the fogs will be released here in a couple of months/by years end.

Nezz 07-05-2012 05:23 AM

Smoker shields stop your cigarette from going out if you're leaning it over the door card. Popular item here in the early nineties-- mind you, they were a lot bigger, too, about 6" wide. They were also officially called "rain guards" but people knew what they were for.

Nezz 07-05-2012 05:24 AM

Oh. And before I forget is there a scan up of the accessories catalogue from .jp? If not I'll do one myself.

Right now, the only way is to order them JDM or EUDM, but I'd wait a couple months as they're an incoming option for the FR-S. So you'll be able to pick them up from a dealer/parts supplier.

As for fit, they will. You'll have to remove the existing cover and replace with the fog housing and light itself. The hard part is the switch to turn them on since your dash doesn't likely have the button and will require cutting and running of wires, etc. Unless you pay someone to install it for you, then you just have to worry about bank.

Nah, I meant the actual catalogue-- there's a paper supplement to the .JP 86 catalogue that has it, but that will do I suppose. If I notice anything missing I'll upload the appropriate page.

EDIT; Will also upload the Modellista stuff if I find it's missing...

Scion: http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h109ca916

- Fog lights (I've heard these are an incoming option for the FR-S.)
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(non-existant): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Clear Side marker lights
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(orange instead of clear): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Heated, side-rear-view mirrors - Possibly power folding. (Standard on the Canadian FR-S but no power folding. Not sure of US availability.)[Requires LHD version of the glass mirrors, I recall from Toyota Cavalier conversions, the mirror magnifications are different for driver and passenger sides. Unless you go with the non-power folding Canadian versions.]

- 86mm exhaust tips

Scion: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...3&d=1322712639

- Badgeing:
Toyota logo front and back, back also has Toyota word logo, as well as GT 86 badge on rear(supposedly EUDM special edition badgeing only?), and Toyota center caps for wheels. I'd have to double check on a production FR-S, but the 86 logo on the fender comes in black and red. The GT 86 Limited and GT86 is red, black is the G 86 and RC 86.

Door handle sensor image 2: http://toyota.jp/86/001_p_001/interi...figure06_2.jpg

- Trunk lid liner (FR-S does not have it at all.)

Subaru: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1339523744

JDM doesn't mean "asian", y'know. I'll have to make a list of differences for the AUDM 86 versus the JDM one.

i know.. that's why i suggested he must take out the "JDM" part in the title and just say plain "86 conversion"

Nah, I meant the actual catalogue-- there's a paper supplement to the .JP 86 catalogue that has it, but that will do I suppose. If I notice anything missing I'll upload the appropriate page.

EDIT; Will also upload the Modellista stuff if I find it's missing...

Modellista/TRD edition are a whole other ball of wax.

The admins/mods changed my title when they posted it on the front page and added that Toyota/Scion image to my original post. I cannot change it now, I tried since they missed "a" between "...to do [a] Scion...". My original title for this thread was "Want to convert your Scion FR-S to a Toyota GT 86 Limited or see the differences? Check this list."

I never had JDM in the title, if you look through my posting I even recommend getting EUDM or Subaru equivalent parts. It was never intended to be a JDM conversion list, it was a Scion to Toyota conversion. Specifically aimed at the GT 86 Limited.

Check the list again, I already have that in there, under exterior.

Edit: Added your video to the post to demonstrate how it works and gave credit.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed this and if this is on the GT86, but the BRZ Limited has a remote trunk button on the trunk deck itself.

Thanks, I've added that to the list and gave you credit.

You also prompted me to dig into Toyota.jp again and see if I could find info about it. I found no images, but google translate helped me find this tid bit:

"detection area outside of Smart Entry & Start system (locking-unlocking of the door) will be within a radius of about 0.7m from the door handle of the door left and right trunk."

This answers one of the other things I wasn't sure of, both door handles passenger and driver side, have the sensors as well as the trunk, as you pointed out. Nice to see what the range of the sensor(s) is as well.

Auto-Hauss 08-05-2012 11:58 PM

Looks like you forgot the BRZ homelink mirror under your interior-rear view mirror section. It's not a JDM toyota part but I'd rather have the homelink option then the frameless mirror.

Nope, I didn't forget it. I left it out intentionally. This is a Scion to Toyota conversion list, not a Scion to Subaru conversion list. Thanks for the info and link though.
