Turbo options/ reliability of Brz

Hey Guys,

I will be buying a new car soon and have narrowed it down between BRZ STI Special Edition (blue- manual)--if I can find one-- and 370 Nismo and had a few questions. Let me also say that this will be the first car I will be boosting and still am a “newbe” when it comes to this stuff.

First regardless of the choice I plan to add a turbo, possibly twin on the Z. However this will just be for road “fun” as I do not plan to do much at the track with it and will be a DD. But who knows. Also my friend just got a wrx sti and I want to mess with him some.

That said I will also be looking for reliability. I know the 370 has been around for a while and has a number of “safe-ish” turbo options, but what about the brz? My friends have told me look for a flash turbo as it will actually reprogram the computer and be safer for the engine?

When it comes down to it I want to know the risk I will be taking with adding a turbo to a new BRZ and if the risk will differ much from similar upgrades to 370. Also what measures can I take to reduce the chances of blowing an engine? Can a properly tuned turbo last200,000 miles or would that be absurd?

Also slightly off topic but is there any word yet if the 2016 version will have a factory turbo yet or is it all speculation? What is the general consensus?

370Z is better since you crossshop them. If you track, 370z overheat easy but that engine is nice.

lol..

Troll is trolling?

Get the 370Z if you want enough power to keep up with a WRX. A turbo will only shorten your engine's life, there is no way around that. That extra pressure is hard on engines, no matter what way you put it.

tell us more danoo, your story is intruiging

Brz will not come from factory with a turbo they aren't going to do it. Regardless of what concept they show at some auto show. Tune is most important thing for reliability. Turbo kits for the z will cost more as does the car itself.

thats misinformation.

They will probably release the turbo on the 2018 version.

AVO has already confirmed that the FA20 engine can handle boost very reliably, not too much of course but it is very durable for FI application.

"If it wasn't for the fact that this FA20 motor is a completely different and modern design with an incredibly well made combustion chamber, we wouldn't even attempt to turbocharge these cars. But while many people associate it with the old EJ20 series motors from Subaru, there is absolutely no comparison besides the fact they are both boxer 4's made by Subaru. The entire design of the engine is different, especially the combustion chamber, which has been improved tremendously from anything previously made by Subaru.

Not only is the engine a major step up, the ECU on this car is also a great design, reacting incredibly fast to knock and adjusting parameters to compensate. This helps increase the reliability of the turbocharged motor. As is well known by now, this is also a direct injection motor, helping both power and gas mileage. We've seen mpg figures as good as stock on the freeway, probably better than stock as we were not exactly sitting on cruise control during our testing!

As you can see from the dyno chart, we saw 243whp (300 crank hp) and 201 ft/lbs of torque at 5-6 psi on 92 octane gas literally from a nearby Chevron gas station. This was with the stock airbox with an AVO high-flow panel filter installed, and a stock secondary cat in place. All these figures were reached on the stock fueling system as well!"

Ok maybe I should have started my
Post with IMHO. But saying they will release a turbo BRZ in 2018 is also misinformation. Multiple times subaru officials have stated the Brz will not be turbo charged from the factory. They have stated a tuned by STi version could be released with more power (NA). But given the not so great sales all the R&D to add a low volume turbo model seems slim to none. I have seen no evidence that a turbo model will ever be released. Again IMHO.

Lemme summarize your post op: You want to keep up with a Subbie and DD and it's between a BRZ and a 370z...

Can't a 370z already keep up with a Subbie?

It's like asking: turbo a Corolla or a 370z, in many ways imo.

BRZ will be loads of fun, I'd say from my experience.... 9/10 fun vs 7/10 on a 370z.

370z is already agile... just fails to have good cooling imoe.

LSS: go 370Z...or why not both? Also the 370Z engine has undergone like 2-3 changes already, it should be as reliable as the BRZ, but because its been out longer, should offer less problems.

Concerning turbo lasting for 200k... NO CAR I KNOW has ever lasted 200k w/ a turbo. It needs rebuilt, and other little things here and there. Especially if you abuse it. I'm sure there have been some vehicles that have gone all their life w/o turbo rebuild, but in my experience and those around me, none have.

There are an awful lot of early WRX's with over 200k that have never needed rebuilds. Granted, this is a very different car, but it absolutely can be done.

Also, has there ever been a stock Diesel engine that didn't make 200k?

continuecrushing 06-15-2015 07:07 PM

2016 has the new LS1 turbo

Yes on semi's. Mainly injectors.
