the OEM wheels don't actually look that good matte white to be honest. I might go back to black soon.

to me all matte black cars always just look like the cars werent finished with the paintjob yet

SLEEPER WRX 05-29-2015 12:23 AM

There is potential here

It needs something . . .

All black is too much

OP I'd try gloss black on the wheels before a high-contrasting satin white. The contrasting finishes will really help tie it together with the glass. (see the maserati granturismo pic below.)

Mostly because they are crappy diy paint jobs or plasti-dip.

A bit of gloss at a 50% or higher in will yeild a much better look. (50% in regards to the flattening agent added to the clearcoats on professional satin automotive finishes... not rattle cans.)

50%+ or Semigloss = sex.

86geek 05-29-2015 12:34 AM

it's ok if you like the matte look....but for me I like a shine in my car. ;)

Painting the rear quarter window on a street car is about the dumbest idea I've seen yet.

Red. The answer back then was always red.

@Kiske Honda had a semi gloss black on some of their bikes in the early/mid 2000s. It was called asphalt. At first glance, it just looked like a matte or semi gloss dark grey. It was full of metallic flake, and really popped when the sunlight hit it. I have the paint code and use it for trim on some of my cars. I agree with you...properly done it looks hot.

Tcoat 05-29-2015 07:25 AM

One of the very reasons I wanted the nice shiny orange was that this is a small, low, hard to spot vehicle in the first place. Flat black just turns it into an almost invisible lump on the highway.
Will watch for the OP to post "some guy ran into me and says he didn't see me. What a loser".

Yeah I was originally going to use this as my base coat for something else but it looks cool in person so I kept it for now. If I plasti dip over it I'll definitely use the gloss finish.

Came out looking cheap. Did you rattle can it, or was this done with a proper spray gun?

Also, the quality of the work will be dictated by the quality of the prep work. You not masking off the rear windows, or the signal lights doesn't tell me this was a very thorough job. I guess if you like it, that's all that matters.

Yeah!

The 2006 Yamaha R6 came to mind also.

The edition was called "Raven" and it was a two-tone matte black and gloss black...

Also: Cool tails OP. I actually like those a lot. :)

When you choose to remove the Plasti Dip you will have a lot off FUN...

Pressure washers work great for that

Removing plasti dip on the body panels is actually pretty easy with enough coats applied. The wheels on the other hand are a huge pain.

With enough coats and given time to cure, plastidip will not come off even with a standard pressure washer. A commercial pressure washer could probably get it off but you risk taking off your paint as well at those pressures.

I agree, but it does have to be offset by something; either different colors or finishes. I like the front view of OP's car offset by the headlights, but the rear looks too dirty. See Asphalt Honda 919:

Honestly IMO plastidip the entire car matte black looks like shit.

It reminds me of the rednecks that spray their entire trucks with black Rhino liner.

Exactly...I had a 599...the one in front. The 2nd bike back is the same color, just a slightly different angle.

chaoskaze 05-29-2015 09:30 PM

........... the horrid

op redo it in semi gloss with some carbon bits would be sexy.

iLaw 05-31-2015 07:21 PM

Ever since I saw this... http://www.toronto-subaru-club.com/f...s-updated.html

Skip to page 3 for the scary part

I've always been worried about PlastiDip-ing painted surfaces on the car. I'd be flipping shit if the paint came off with the 'dip.

Mr.Impreza 05-31-2015 07:34 PM

Honestly.....$500 civic.

I don't understand what is so cool about making a car all black or matte black. Looks cheap, not good, not bad ass, not batman.

N_A 05-31-2015 11:22 PM

You forgot to plastidip the windshield. Go hard or go home. YOLO.

richardM 06-01-2015 12:31 AM

I think it looks fine.
I lined up behind an open wheel car at a time attack (one lap track autocross) and got pebble sprayed on his launch.

I bet that stuff can take a hit.. or just a shot of spray can if you get a nick. I sit inside.. and don't care how it looks much.

Actually it's not that durable. It will chip easier than paint and offer little to no protection to what's underneath. And touch ups will show.

FWIW, it's also a bitch to clean. Caked on dirt doesn't come off easily, as plastidip is porous. I've read stories of plastidipped white cars getting stains from windshield washer fluid, oil etc.

IMO, if you really want to change the colour of your car, vinyl is a far better option than Plastidip.

snow 06-01-2015 10:54 AM

I think it needs a slight gloss like the Maserati in the prior page. I love dip but it tends to look too plain if you don't put some gloss on it..
